Dan Burn is undoubtedly a Newcastle United legend but he invoked the ire of supporters on social media on Sunday.

Indeed, as Burn and his Newcastle United teammates were simply going through motions in their 2-0 defeat away at Fulham to round off a miserable Premier League campaign, the major story was elsewhere.

Former Newcastle striker Callum Wilson was involved in the relegation battle, one his side West Ham eventually lost despite beating Leeds because Tottenham beat Everton.

Burn asked fans what the West Ham score was during Newcastle United game

According to George Caulkin of The Athletic, Burn asked fans in the crowd at Craven Cottage what the score between West Ham and Leeds was during a drinks break.

Now, there is little point in pretending that is an outrage, all things considered.

Still, it does little to dispel the idea that Newcastle were just waiting for the season to end. They limped along to the finish line and, had the campaign dragged any longer, a relegation battle may well have been on the cards.

Burn was criticised on social media and that, frankly, is not all that surprising.

Newcastle go into next season with positively no momentum. They were gutless at Fulham and there is precious little to suggest things will improve next time out.

Burn is a Newcastle United legend and is certainly worthy of respect.

In isolation, asking what the score was in the West Ham game could be deemed as endearing. Fans constantly ask footballers to be more relatable, so it seems harsh to criticise them when they do so.

Still, it’s hard to look at it through the prism of this season. It’s often left like everyone was just waiting for this miserable season to end, with any hopes and dreams shattered long ago.

The mentality has been questioned for a while and this doesn’t answer that particularly well.
