With Coventry shellshocked they were there for the taking and Newcastle United then…4-1

It ended Coventry 4 Newcastle 1, Monday night football and Newcastle United do not mix well.

This was a humiliating defeat at the Coventry Building Society Arena, United going down by four goals to one on an evening where they dominated possession but lacked the clinical finishing of their hosts.

Despite controlling 67% of the ball and unleashing 19 shots, United were punished as a series of defensive lapses and profligate finishing proved costly.

The evening got off to a terrible start when Lukas Hornicek spilled the ball before fouling Sidiki Cherif in the box, Jack Rudoni converting from the spot to put the hosts in front.

After that, Coventry were made to look very ordinary, Fernandez-Pardo looking lively and with two big chances to get United back on terms.

The first came when Murphy whipped in an inviting low cross, only for the Belgian to inexplicably dummy the ball inside the six-yard box when there was no teammate running in behind.

Then, on the stroke of half-time, after Nico González slipped him a beautiful through ball, the youngster rounded the keeper only to see his goalbound shot cleared by Bobby Thomas, the hosts somehow reaching the interval with their lead intact.

Just minutes after the restart, instead of getting a free-kick when Joe Willock was clearly fouled, referee John Brooks somehow gave the decision to the home side AND made Willock leave the pitch for a minute having had to have treatment, for the foul on him…

Whilst Joe Willock waited to come back on, Coventry capitalised, Cherif drilling his shot into the bottom corner to make it 2-0 after ten men Newcastle failed to deal with a long throw.

Despite falling further behind, the Magpies dug deep, clawing their way back into the game in the 70th minute. Sven Botman, who hadn’t had the best of evenings, picked up the ball 25 yards out and drove forward, then unleashed an absolute rocket into the top left-hand corner to make it 2-1.

With Coventry shellshocked they were there for the taking and Newcastle poured forward looking for an equaliser.

Bazoumana Touré missed the target from a great position and Yoane Wissa wasted an opportunity inside the box by failing to get a shot away.

Whilst an equaliser looked more than likely, United hit the self-destruct button, their profligacy in front of goal together with some woeful defending severely punished in the final ten minutes.

In the 81st minute, errors by Lewis Hall and Joelinton allowed Coventry to recycle the ball and substitute Ellis Simms swept the ball home from the edge of the box.

Drained and deflated, the Newcastle collapse was complete five minutes later when teenage substitute Stephen Mfuni added Coventry’s fourth.

So it’s another Monday night on the road to be forgotten, excluding bank holidays that’s our 21st defeat in 31 Monday night games away from St James Park since September 2002.
