Former Newcastle United star Miguel Almiron made history in San Francisco on Friday night (early Saturday in UK time).
Turkey up against Paraguay in the second round of group matches.
With both teams losing their opening matches against Australia and the USA respectively, a huge game.
A dream start for Paraguay as it only took 64 seconds for Galarza to give them the lead.
Paraguay were to have only one further shot on target in the entire match.
Turkey dominating with an astonishing 32 shots, plus 12 corners to Paraguay’s none.
Yet Paraguay somehow won 1-0.
Turkey are heading home after two defeats whilst Paraguay are now in a great position to qualify, remarkable.
However, not all good news for Miguel Almiron and Paraguay.
The former Newcastle United star making World Cup history.
Miguel Almiron the first player to ever be shown a red card at a World Cup match for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent.
This happened just before the break, with Miguel Almiron covering his mouth with his hand while speaking to Turkey’s Mert Muldur, who immediately informed an official standing next to him.
Following a check by the video assistant referee (VAR), the on-pitch referee Ivan Barton from El Salvador announced to the crowd that he was sending off the former Newcastle United player.
The 32-year-old Miguel Almiron left devastated.
The new rule implemented for the first time at the World Cup, the decision to introduce it was taken at a special meeting of the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in Vancouver in April.
Miguel Almiron had actually fallen foul of another new law during Paraguay’s opening World Cup group match against the United States, another World Cup first!
The referee on that occasion initially booked US defender Tim Ream for fouling Miguel Almiron, but after a VAR review it was deemed that Miggy had dived and he was shown a yellow card instead.
Paraguay now face Australia on Thursday (early Friday in UK time) without Almiron in their final group match.
