Welcome to day fourteen of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group automatically going through and the eight best performing teams who finish third in their groups.
So only 16 of the 48 countries will be knocked out after the 72 group games have all played out, with the other 32 teams going through to the knockout stages.
We have now reached a point where 54 of the 72 group games have been played. That means the halfway point of the 2026 World Cup has been passed, with 50 games in total still to go when you include the knockout stages.
Wednesday saw the acceleration of the process with the start of the third round group games and all four teams in a group playing at the same time.
Group B was sorted on Wednesday night (UK time), Canada only needed a draw to finish top of the group but Switzerland well worth their 2-1 win that saw them finish as the dominant team. This means that Canada lose home advantage as failing to top the group moves them outside their country for the last 32 knockout match.
An entertaining game eventually saw Bosnia-Herzegovina win 3-1 against Qatar and they finish third in the group on four points and will also go through to the last 32.
Another couple of entertaining matches then decided Group C. Bruno Guimaraes excellent and Brazil very good overall as they hammered Scotland 3-0, it could and should have been five or six. Bruno got two assists as he set up Vinicius Jnr’s second goal and Brazil’s third for Cunha.
Morocco twice had to come from behind before eventually winning 4-2 against Haiti. Brazil won the group on seven points and Morocco the same but with worse goal difference. Scotland third in Group C with three points and a -3 goal difference which is reckoned to give them a 30% to 40% chance of progressing as one of the eight (of twelve) best performing third placed teams.
Fair play to Mexico who have ended up top of Group A with three wins, six goals scored and none conceded. A pretty weak group in fairness but nobody will be keen on facing them in Mexico City when the knockout stages are in play, the last 32. Mexico easily won 3-0 against Czech Republic in the final group games.
The other match in Group A saw South Africa pull off a shock 1-0 win over South Korea. South Africa progress as second in the group and South Korea likely to progress as one of the third placed teams, they ended up with three points and a -1 goal difference.
It is now 161 goals in 54 matches and this 2026 World Cup no longer on track to average three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup, although just one goal short of that three goal average. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.98 goals per game after the opening 54 matches.
