Hull City and Middlesbrough at Wembley today in the Championship play-off final to decide which club would be playing in the Premier League next season.
The heatwave not helping as a tense game saw only one shot on target in the regulation 90 minutes.
Eight minutes added of injury time and just when it looked like we were heading for extra-time the big moment came.
Five minutes into added time and a mistake from Boro goalkeeper Sol Brynn, Yu Hirakawa whips in a cross from the left but Brynn can only fumble it into the path of Oli McBurnie, the former Sheffield United striker scoring.
McBurnie booked after ripping his shirt off in celebration.
It ended up with 16 minutes added time before the final whistle eventually blew, Hull City and not Middlesbrough to play in the Premier League next season.
I think justice done in the end.
Southampton kicked out after winning their semi-final 2-1 on aggregate.
Middlesbrough losing 2-1 but progressing to the final due to the Saints behaviour with Spygate.
However, Hull City had done the job in the semis when beating Millwall 2-0 on aggregate and then found out they were playing Middlesbrough not Southampton days before the final.
The Championship play-off final used to be billed as the £100million match but now that appears to have become inflated to a £200million winner takes all contest today.
We polled Newcastle United fans ahead of today’s kick-off, as to would you rather Hull City fans or Middlesbrough supporters experienced the joy at Wembley today? Able to look forward to watching Premier League football next season.
The Newcastle fans voted 24% Hull City and 76% Middlesbrough but the majority who voted left disappointed that there will not be three north-east clubs in the Premier League next season. Though Hull City not a bad alternative as they are just down the coast and decent having another northern club in the top tier.
