Where was the urgency?

Newcastle United started slowly, were wasteful in possession and gave away four free-kicks in the first six minutes, notably the foul by Hornicek. The ball bounces off him far too often. Botman was also culpable for the penalty incident.

Murphy, Wissa and Barnes, our most experienced players, were sloppy.

Four offsides stalled our momentum.

Fernandez-Pardo should have equalised in a first half we dominated but the failure to take chances was worrying.

The absence of half-time substitutes surprised me, considering our lack of bite.

Coventry showed more ambition and showed how to win a football match soon after the interval with a fierce low shot into the corner of the net when a long throw was not properly cleared.

After 58 minutes, Joelinton, Toure and Dedic came on for Willock, Murphy and Miley. None of those replaced had done enough. Neither had most of their teammates.

Out of nowhere, Botman blasted us back into contention with a 20-yard rocket. Finally, we looked dangerous in attack, though Coventry were also lively on their rare breakaways.

The return of Osula for Wissa on 78 minutes was a welcome sight but Toure, rather than seizing the chance to impress, wasted two good openings when the equaliser looked on.

Any hope of avoiding defeat vanished when first Hall and then Joelinton dallied in possession. Coventry took full advantage, then rubbed salt in United’s wounds by scoring an even later fourth.

A follow-through tackle on Toure was painful enough for Burn to make his seasonal debut but that appearance was cold comfort after we lost a game by defending weakly and attacking like a drunk with double vision.
