After a phony war played out via the media throughout June and July, Monday brought news that Arsenal had finally broken cover and made an offer for Bruno Guimaraes.
To nobody’s surprise it was a lowball offer from the Gunners that was instantly rejected by Newcastle United.
Arsenal continuing to play games and we now wait to see if they finally show any serious intent to try and sign Bruno Guimaraes.
It has been widely reported that Bruno Guimaraes wants to move to the Emirates BUT he has made clear that he will only do so if Arsenal make an offer that meets the Newcastle United valuation. The United captain unwilling to be part of any games to try and help Arteta and friends try and get him on the cheap.
I was disappointed when Kieran Trippier left St James’ Park at the end of his contract but he will soon turn 36 and having dropped down to the Championship with Wolves, I wish him and his new team best of luck next season.
I was more disappointed when Anthony Gordon departed. At the same time, his form had been up and down and a £70m deal softened the blow, plus he is out of sight out of mind in La Liga. Newcastle United can’t play Barcelona, well not until the 2027/28 season at the earliest…
With Sandro Tonali I imagined I would be more bothered. However, £100m is serious money and a bit of a reality check that no other major clubs were interested in signing him. Tonali having to settle for a club that has eluded relegation by only one position in both of these last two seasons, is surely not what Sandro envisaged when he made clear he was interested in moving on. I still think he is a good player, just maybe not as good as I thought at one time he could be. A midfielder who costs £100m but doesn’t score or create many goals has to be very special and I am not convinced he is. Plus when I have seen images of him in a Spurs shirt I can’t say it has bothered me at all, maybe the best guide of all.
What about Bruno Guimaraes then?
Well, I am already absolutely dreading the possibility of him leaving and the thought of him in an Arsenal shirt already has me reaching for the sick bucket.
Even the thought of how his parents will react to their son leaving Newcastle United is already getting to me, especially Bruno’s dad. I can already imagine him saying farewell on social media with tears streaming down his face, Bruno’s parents have been absolute stars and clearly loved their interaction with the Newcastle United fans.
Bruno’s parents are adopted Geordies just like their son, as for Bruno and his partner’s two sons they are absolutely Geordies, born and raised here, up until now anyway.
Unlike Tottenham and Sandro Tonali, Arsenal are the current Premier League champions and very nearly reigning Champions League winners. I think last season to an extent the Gunners carried plenty luck to be so successful. If they have Bruno Guimaraes wearing an Arsenal shirt then I don’t think they will need luck to repeat that success.
He is Newcastle United’s best player and so much more than that, the thought of Arteta and the Arsenal fans getting their hands on him just doesn’t bear thinking about.
