Ahead of the World Cup finals disappointment for Yoane Wissa

Not the best of Tuesdays for Yoane Wissa.

The Newcastle United striker and his DR Congo teammates losing their final warm up match ahead of the World Cup finals.

It looked like the friendly wasn’t going to go ahead at all, when Spain decided against hosting the DR Congo v Chile match due to Ebola concerns.

In the end though it did go ahead, albeit behind closed doors, played at the Stade de la Source in Orleans, France.

A poor goalless first half ended with Yoane Wissa and two others subbed off at the break, then DR Congo went 2-0 down in the second half due to goals from Osorio and Sepulveda for Chile. Kayembe getting a late consolation for DR Congo.

Last week DR Congo played out a decent draw with Denmark, Yoane Wissa played all but the last few minutes of that 0-0 draw.

Tuesday’s defeat to Chile not so good, especially considering they finished rock bottom of the South American World Cup qualifying group and only won two of their 18 qualifiers.

Yoane Wissa and his DR Congo team have their first World Cup group match in eight days time, a tough start as on Wednesday 17 June they face Portugal.

The 2026 World Cup finals begin on Thursday 11 June and run through until the final on Sunday 19 July.
