Northumbria Police make an arrest following allegation of racist abuse at the derby match

A man has been arrested in relation to a report of racist abuse at the Newcastle United v Sunderland derby.

A 45 year old male arrested today (Tuesday 1 April) on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence.

ITV News report that: ‘Northumbria Police said the man from the Gateshead area has since been released on bail pending further enquiries.’

Sunderland player Lutsharel Geertruida alleging that somebody, or more than one person, in the crowd had racially abused him.

The first time that a Premier League match has then been paused after an alleged incident such as this.

Premier League Match Centre account on X/Twitter – Sunday 22 March 2026:

‘Today’s match between Newcastle United and Sunderland was temporarily paused during the second half after a report of discriminatory abuse from the crowd, directed at Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida.

This is in line with the Premier League’s on-field anti-discrimination protocol. The incident at St James’ Park will now be fully investigated. We offer our full support to the player and both clubs. Racism has no place in our game, or anywhere in society. We will continue to work with stakeholders and authorities to ensure our stadiums are an inclusive and welcoming environment for all.’

Newcastle United official statement – Sunday 22 March 2026:

‘A statement from Newcastle United following the Tyne-Wear derby at St. James’ Park.

We are aware of a report of racism made by a visiting player against someone in the crowd during our Premier League match against Sunderland.

Our stance is clear – we do not tolerate discrimination of any form. We will work with the authorities to fully investigate and will ensure any individuals are identified and held accountable.’
