The Matthias Jaissle pre-Hull press conference has taken place.
Newcastle United facing the recently promoted side at 3pm on Saturday at St James’ Park.
Five players missed the game at Leeds United on Monday night – Dan Burn, William Osula, Anthony Elanga, Ewen Jaouen and Joelinton.
The Newcastle United boss revealing today that he doesn’t expect any of those who have been missing through injury to return on Saturday.
The only small positive is that Matthias Jaissle hopes that Anthony Elanga’s injury is “not that serious” after he missed Leeds United. It is all relative of course and the Forest winger is still due an MRI scan today to determine the extent of his injury. A media exclusive earlier today reported that claims of a serious knee injury that would mean a very long absence were wide of the mark, Craig Hope of The Mail saying instead had told him it was understood to be a muscle injury in the hamstring area that could likely mean Anthony Elanga would be out for between six and eight weeks.
The additional bad news today though was Matthias Jaissle confirming that Amar Dedic, Nico Gonzalez and Jacob Ramsey would also be definitely missing against Hull City. Which means it looks like at least eight players the Head Coach will have to do without.
Matthias Jaissle no doubt desperate to get Saturday out of the way as he then has 23 days until the Coventry away game, a chance to get some of the missing players fit and to work with all of the squad who aren’t on international duty over a considerable period of time.
Matthias Jaissle on the Anthony Elanga injury: “No real update on Anthony. I’ve spoken with him now, he is heading for an MRI scan. We will get more clarity after that, and hope it’s not too serious. It is sad after the great start he had. He is a key strength in our squad and we want to stay positive.”
Matthias Jaissle on other team news injuries and availability: “We have no new players coming back for the Hull game. We have some injured players missing, but we use that as an opportunity for others. Anthony (Elanga) and Amar (Dedić) will not be able to play on Saturday. JJ (Jacob Ramsey) is injured. Hopefully after the international break our injury list is shorter.”
Matthias Jaissle on the need to bounce back after losing at Leeds: “It is really important to show the right reaction after the Leeds United match. We are fully aligned and fully committed to show a reaction in front of our fans. It would be nice to finish this block of fixtures before the international break with a good result.”
Matthias Jaissle on Hull City who have yet to lose in the Premier League in 2026/27: “Hull are doing a great job, they have a clear identity. They know exactly what they are doing and what their strengths are and how to execute them on the pitch. We need to take their strengths away and use their weaknesses to get a good result.”
Matthias Jaissle on returning to St. James’ Park to play this next match on Saturday: “I am really optimistic with our fans, they have a good feeling and sense of the challenges we have. They are supporting us. We are happy we are back home in front of them on the weekend.”
An early season injury crisis with it appears to be at least these eight Newcastle United players set to be missing on Saturday against Hull City:
Dan Burn – Ankle/foot
Joelinton – Thigh
Jacob Ramsey – Thigh
William Osula – Ankle
Nico Gonzalez – Concussion protocols
Ewen Jaouen – Ankle
Anthony Elanga -Unknown
Amar Dedic – Unknown
