Moving on from Valarenga, former Newcastle United striker Elias Sorensen has now signed for PEC Zwolle.
The 26-year-old bought in ahead of the 2026/27 season.
PEC Zwolle with an official statement: ‘Elias Sørensen (26) will strengthen PEC Zwolle. The Danish attacker is being acquired from Vålerenga IF in the Eliteserien, the highest division in Norway. Sørensen signs a contract in Zwolle for three seasons with an option for another year.’
PEV ZwolleTechnical Director Gerry Hamstra talking about the new signing: “Elias is a complete attacker with goal-scoring ability and speed. His preferred position is left winger, but he can also play as a centre forward. We are pleased that we have reached an agreement with Vålerenga IF and that we have Elias, who was already halfway through the season in Norway, with us right from the start.”
The Danish striker arrived at St James’ Park as a sixteen year old and was very successful playing below first team level, scoring for fun.
For a time it looked as though he could possibly make the step up to first team level with Newcastle but it didn’t quite happen. After a number of loan spells Elias Sorensen eventually made a permanent move from NUFC to play for Esbjerg in July 2021.
When I saw this latest move had happened, I looked back and found some interesting comments from Elias Sorensen back in 2023, a couple of years after he left, talking about his experiences at Newcastle United and his comments on the a certain player who is now first choice for England…
Elias Sorensen speaking to Danish media in October 2023 about his time at Newcastle United:
“When I played for Newcastle, I felt that I should be playing for the first team because I scored so many goals on the under 23 team and I also scored goals with the under 21 national team. My goal back then was to play for Newcastle’s first team.
“Elliott Anderson was the standout player (in the under 23 side). He was very young when I was there. He played with us on the under 23 team when he was only 16-17 years old. He was already incredibly talented back then. When he had the ball, it was absolutely insane how good he was.
“It was insane (at Newcastle United). The culture over there is completely different from here at home. It was a little boy from Nakskov who came to England and had to play for Newcastle. We went to watch the first team’s matches and it was sold out every week. They live and breathe football. It was absolutely wild.”
