After the semi-final defeat to Argentina, my London born wife and England supporter was off to bed angry as hell at the result. She happens to be of Nigerian heritage by the way but is more English than me on so many levels.
I dealt with the defeat by simply avoiding the news, watching banal comedy on TV before the inevitable sleep and the routine of back to the grindstone in the knowledge that almost everyone at work will be discussing what unfolded in Trumpland the night before.
My morning routine was altered by the fact I could not bear the repetitive loops of football commentary on the news that seemed to have been created by the media to wind people up. If that was the intention it worked and even the presenters appeared to be getting more and more angry about the result. Throw on to the powder keg the unfurling of a political banner by at least one Argentine Premier league player (I can’t wait to hear what my old boy Chelsea drinking pals will have to say – they will want him out their club without a doubt) and the media wind up is complete.
I am not the biggest England fan but over the years of watching England, Argentina have got under my skin.
The hand of god made me destroy my World Cup wall chart in pure anger and disgust in ’86. Back in ’78 their shenanigans about a Dutch player in a plaster cast had wound me and my brothers up. All this as we sat watching our first colour TV willing the Dutch on. I could go on with the Beckham saga and more detail of the depth of dislike I have for Argentina as a football team…

I still can’t believe that King Kev is no longer with us.
I was so looking forward to seeing him make at least one more appearance at a match at St James’ Park next season.
Quite incredible though how it has worked out, Newcastle United and Liverpool the first match when we can come together and give thanks, the two clubs most connected to him.

I watched with bated breath the GHead v Toon friendly. Let’s be blunt, Gateshead were dire.
It looks to me that there is a real lack of guile at the club, extending from the 1st team through to this shambolic crew. Murphy, Willock, Ramsey, Barnes – I have no words. At least when the bairns came on a couple of them did show some energy but absolutely zero guile. What on earth are we doing on the training ground? Not guile that is for sure. Given we’re about to lose Bruno, where will our already guileless team going to get it from? Steur looks decent, hopefully he’ll have someone to play with, fingers crossed, he did well. He’s a spotter of a pass in and around the box. Looked useful. Murphy, Willock, Ramsey can’t do this. Is Steur gonna be our Bruno replacement? At least I saw one ray of sunshine.
An interesting season awaits.

Dear Mag,
Rio Ferdinand suggesting hydration (advertising) breaks would be a good thing if introduced to the Premier League, after their use at the World Cup.
I am not sure how he can justify the desperate need for football to grab every penny they can, without any consideration for the enjoyment of the game for the fans (Those are not the ones on a corporate jolly but those that have paid to get in ).
The only benefit I can see is that it gives us older tv fans a chance to go to the toilet in the middle of the half!
Even the opportunity to coach a side playing badly gives little more benefit than shouting instructions from the technical area.
The other issue that has not been considered is on a snowy January night in Newcastle, how many players want to stop for a nice cooling drink. Mmmm not sure what the players will think to that as their muscles tighten up. Perhaps they could have a nice cup of tea instead.
