Interesting to read through these BBC Sport ‘neutrals’ comments, following on from Newcastle United defeating West Brom.
A 3-2 win that takes United through to the Carabao Cup third round.
United going behind but bouncing back to win 3-2.
It could and should have been by a bigger winning margin as after a competitive opening half, Newcastle were the dominant team after the break.
Penalties conceded in consecutive matches by Lewis Hall, once again a conversation as to whether or not it should have been given, this time the woeful Bobby Madley (how is he still a referee???) pointing to the spot.
The BBC Sport readers comments from neutrals….
‘An encouraging showing by us I thought. You could see the PL class from Newcastle in the 2nd half when they seemed to overrun us.’
‘Well played Baggies. Unlucky. We gave a Premier League team with £100 million worth of talent on the bench a good run for their money.’
‘Dedic looks a very good signing for Newcastle.’
‘I mean I’m a Liverpool fan so no axe to grind with either team, but gave to say that Elanga incident at the end might just be the worst piece of officiating I have ever seen! Perhaps Kerkez should have done that on Sunday but am pretty sure he’d have got a red card. Madley is a complete chump but what on earth was the linesman doing?’
‘You’re spot on. It was up there with Chris Kavanagh’s performance in the cup tie between Villa and Newcastle at Villa Park last season.’
‘Crikey but ref Bobby Madley is so poor. Has literally no idea of how to do his job. Horrific display.’
‘If he got a decision right in this game it was by accident for sure. Sometimes his assistants were making decisions for him from 40 yards away when he was 4-5 yards away.
I’m not sure any of the refereeing directives from the summer were followed, either.
It was desperately poor and must raise more questions about Howard Webb’s suitability for the job when this is what he’s sending out.’
‘Madley has form against Newcastle too. He’s the bungling ref who awarded a soft penalty AND sent Coloccini off in the tyne-wear derby in 2015. Newcastle had been dominating that game and Sunderland went on to win 3-0.’
‘Coloccini got the sending off rescinded but it didn’t help us during the game.It was a disgraceful decision.’
‘The incident in the dying seconds where Elanga was hauled back by his man who had a full shirt full was the clearest yellow card you will ever see. Madeley didn’t even give a foul. One of the worst single decisions I have ever seen on a football pitch.’
‘I know it is 40 plus years ago, but the Madley brothers cannot compare to the decisions of Trelford Mills and Brian Coddington.’
‘A good effort by the baggies who are my dark horses in the championship this season and all the best to Newcastle for the rest of the season.’
‘There’s always one or two dark horses in the championship each season (last season was hull for example)
I have no reason to see why West Brom aren’t this year with their players.’
‘We need some Boing Boing in the PL to counteract the tourists and venture capitalist nonsense from the fake 6.’
‘(Manchester City fan) “fake 6” ?
Top “6” being a position that you’d like your own supported FC to regularly feature, I assume…
Obviously like it or not, depending on who a.n.other fan supports, they’ll always be a Top6 of finishers at Season’s end.
So we’ve got “fake 6” ^, Top6 every Season.
What next – “real 6” (?) or what ?’
‘Babbling on.
The ‘Protected 6′ how about that?’
‘Of which Newcastle will never be a part of. As your a small club outside of Newcastle.’
‘I’m optimistic about the season ahead for Newcastle, I think we’ll do better than most expect. Some good performances tonight, especially from Steur and Dedić, and with Livramento due to return and the signing of Nico, matched with the style of football the manager wants to play, I’m sure we’ll only get better.’
‘If the arm makes the body bigger, it’s a penalty. His arms are nowhere near his side, his elbow is the lowest part of his arm at the point of contact.
‘It hits Hall on the thigh first and that’s why it’s not a pen.’
‘Good cup tie – for me the right result but woeful refereeing.’
‘It wasn’t a pen as the ball came off his thigh onto the arm, if another part of the body diverts the ball onto arm/hand, no pen.’
‘Well done baggies. Took a Newcastle team toe to toe, proud in defeat .’
‘I’m glad we’ve gone up there and offered a decent challenge to a prem side. Things are beginning to feel different at the Albion. Well played Newcastle though.’
‘First half Albion were the better side -could have scored more. Second half the Toon overran us and our subs weakened us. Barnes is still a class act – as he was for six months at the Albion – and was the difference in the end.’
‘Solid display from the Baggies..one player made the difference…arguably the best player at Newcastle and someone who won a lot of admirers eight years ago in his tenure at the Hawthorns. Wish we could have bought him! Best of luck to the Toon…hope they win it again!’
‘I don’t understand why Harvey Barnes isn’t a big star. I’m a Baggies fan, and when we had him on loan I was well impressed. IMO he should be an England regular, but he seems to have difficulty even being a Newcastle regular!’
