It ended Coventry City 4 Newcastle United 1.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An interesting game at the CBS Arena…
Plenty to talk about after this Premier League game.
Newcastle United giving away the most feeble of penalties inside four minutes and ultimately a three goal margin defeat.
On this occasion it is David Punton:
POSITIVES
Chances created
We did at least create plenty of chances.
Injured players back
The injury crisis is clearing up. Dan Burn is back. Joelinton is back. Dedic is back.
Decent goal
That was a nice goal from Sven Botman, there is no denying that.
NEGATIVES
Another thumping
They can’t hide from the fact that that’s another 4-1 hammering away from home.
It’s not sustainable. The manager will know that.
It sets major alarm bells ringing about our progress and where this season is going to take us.
Defensively, we’re a big worry.
Manager moans
Our new manager has got a big in-tray.
There’s a lot for him to sort out after a decent enough start to the season.
Pressure could build on him quite quickly.
Why is he using Nico has a holding player?
Why is Wissa playing as a number ten when he’s not suited there?
Why is Fernandez-Pardo at number nine when it ought to be Wissa?
Why is Jacob Murpphy getting a game when they have an exciting talent in Toure?
Away the lads
Since Newcastle United won the League Cup on 16 March 2025, NUFC have won six Premier League away matches in 26 attempts.
In that there are six draws and 14 defeats.
We know the Premier League is tough but this is a big concern.
