Newcastle United absolutely magnificent as it ends Newcastle 2 Hull 1

Brilliant stuff from Matthias Jaissle and his players as it ended Newcastle 2 Hull 1.

This was a huge match for so many reasons.

The performance and the 4-1 scoreline on Monday at Leeds United.

The fact that a ridiculously long international break followed this Hull game, with 23 days until Newcastle next play away at Coventry.

Up against a Hull City side who have started the season in superb fashion. Outplaying Man U and the Mancs lucky to only lose 2-0, then Hull defeating Coventry, before a draw against Villa and then they deserved to beat Chelsea, only for Alonso’s team to get a late equaliser

The visitors arrived at St James’ Park standing fourth in the Premier League, brimming with confidence and momentum.

Matthias Jaissle coming into this match with a crazy injury crisis.

The latest one is Tino Livramento who instead of replacing the injured Amar Dedic, finds himself injured yet again and not in this matchday squad.

On the bench were Schar, 20-year-olds Toure and Bamba who have never started a Premier League match, then five other outfield players who have never played a single minute of EPL football and three of them only 17-years-old! Nick Pope the ninth player on the bench.

Fair to say Newcastle United fans faced this match with some trepidation but inside St James’ Park they really got behind the team at the first whistle and the players were magnificent.

They totally outplayed Hull for more than an hour and controlled the match.

Some great intelligent passing moves and Joe Willock a quality left foot finish inside three minutes, then four minutes later a sweet strike from Lewis Hall through a defender’s legs and into the far corner.

Newcastle United could and should then have taken advantage of their dominance with more goals but Hull were clinging on. Then just before the break a clear foul on Murphy and a penalty, Wissa tried to put it in the bottom corner but a very good save.

If 3-0 up at the break then game over, at 2-0 you always think what if the opposition somehow find a goal….

To be fair, the United players didn’t let the penalty affect them and the second half continued and chances created, Botman a free header from a set-piece and anywhere other than straight at the keeper it was a goal.

Sean Steur had been exceptional and like so many others had put so much work into his performance, no surprise when on 66 minutes he went down with cramp.

The only outfield player on the bench who had ever started a Premier League match was Fabian Schar.

So Matthias Jaissle feeling he had no option but to bring on the experienced Schar and rearrange his team. Schar became one of three central defenders, Murphy went to right wing-back and Hall on the other side, Miley playing as an emergency right-back moved into midfield.

Without needing this reorganisation, if Steur had stayed on (or the likes of Joelinton, Ramsey etc had been able to come on and play in midfield) then no way would the next thing have happened. Within a minute of the enforced substitution as United were getting into shape, Hull pressed and suddenly found a gap and Cho went through and scored off the post.

Still a quarter of the match remained and we knew what was coming.

Hull City throwing everything at it and a tiring United who should have killed them off, now in a desperate fight to keep the three points.

Fernandez-Pardo must have covered an incredible distance and usually sprinting, as he chased and harried and looked for openings. On 74 minutes he was down with cramp and Toure replaced him.

Hull sent the ball into the penalty area countless times and brilliant defending as a tired and youthful United team repelled everything, bodies thrown in front of shots and crosses. It was magnificent.

Bamba on for a knackered Willock on 87 minutes and then somehow six minutes of added time.

This Newcastle United team stood firm though and fully deserved a huge win and three points.

Matthias Jaissle goes into the international break with a scarcely believable record of four wins, two draws and just the one defeat. When you consider he came in with just 18 days until the season started and United having lost so many key players and brought in nine signings who were aged 24 and under, five of them aged 20 and under.

Matthias Jaissle has been incredible and here’s hoping he has a few more options available in 23 days time.
