Yoane Wissa has been playing at the Jalisco Stadium in Guadalajara, Mexico.
The match on Wednesday seeing DR Congo up against Bermuda, a warm up friendly match ahead of their all or nothing World Cup play-off.
Yoane Wissa opted out of selection with DR Congo for the African Cup of Nations in December and January, in order to get properly fit with Newcastle United and get some regular football.
That plan hasn’t worked out too well, In total Yoane Wissa has still only started eight matches for Newcastle United and made 13 sub appearances. The forward only coming on in the 89th minute on Sunday in the Sunderland match.
The former Brentford striker with three goals for United so far, plus one assist.
However, he was back on the scoresheet in Guadalajara. Mayele opened the scoring for DR Congo just before half-time, Yoane Wissa stepped up on 51 minutes to score from the penalty spot the match ending in a 2-0 victory.
If they get through their play-off, DR Congo would become the 10th African country to qualify for the 2026 World Cup finals that kick off in June.
Jamaica play New Caledonia on 26 March, then the winners of that will play DR Congo on 31 March in an all or nothing match which will decide which team plays in the World Cup finals.
That DR Congo play-off game to also take place in Guadalajara, Mexico.
If progressing, Yoane Wissa and DR Congo will be in Group K with Colombia, Portugal and Uzbekistan, at the 2026 World Cup finals.
It seems an awful long time ago when Yoane Wissa signed for Newcastle United back in September (2025) and immediately picked up a serious injury playing for DR Congo, before he had even kicked a ball for United.
Yoane Wissa scored against Senegal on 9 September 2025 in a crucial World Cup group qualifier before injury forced him off the pitch, looking to have helped DR Congo to automatic qualification for the 2026 Summer World Cup finals. However, in the Newcastle United striker’s absence, his DR Congo teammates throwing away that automatic qualification place that had been in their grasp.
A massive second chance though of redemption for Yoane Wissa and the players who let that chance slip away, when they play this one-off play-off next week.
