Sandro Tonali was forced off due to injury in the Champions League match last Wednesday in Barcelona.
The midfielder then went for an MRI scan on the Thursday.
Eddie Howe on Friday saying that the scans suggested no major injury.
However, Sandro Tonali not available for the matchday squad that faced Sunderland yesterday.
With the World Cup play-offs fast approaching, Italy were at least as concerned as Newcastle United about the condition of their star midfielder.
Ahead of Thursday’s World Cup play-off semi-final against Northern Ireland, Italy boss Gennaro Gattuso has given an update on the situations regarding a number of his players.
“Sandro Tonali will train with a low workload today.
“Guanluca Mancini has fatigue, with no issues seen after tests.
“Riccardo Calafiori felt a little discomfort yesterday but we hope he will be there.
“Gianluca Scamacca has an adductor problem and we evaluate him day by day, same as Alessandro Bastoni.
“Federico Chiesa arrived yesterday. He had a few physical problems and we decided it was useless for him to stay here.”
Before the MRI scan results were known, Gazzetta Dello Sport said about Sandro Tonali: ‘The national team is holding its breath over Sandro Tonali’s condition. Tonali was clearly expected to be a starting player for Gattuso’s national team, which is aiming to return to the World Cup for the first time since 2014. In Bergamo, on March 26, the Azzurri will host Northern Ireland. If they win, they will travel to face Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina five days later. The winner of the play-off will advance to a World Cup group with co-hosts Canada, Switzerland, and Qatar.’
