Kieran Trippier is now considering his legal position after joining Wolves from Newcastle United.
The Times breaking this story about the England international now having second thoughts.
Wolves boss Rob Edwards signed Kieran Trippier on Monday 8 June.
Wolves boss Rob Edwards sacked on Thursday 11 June.
Wolves boss Rob Edwards having also completed the signing of Raul Jimenez on Tuesday 9 June.
On Thursday, it was John Percy of The Telegraph who broke the story of the shock sacking: “Wolves have sacked Rob Edwards. Cesar Peixoto to be appointed as his replacement. This is utterly mad timing and so harsh as Edwards has been planning all summer for next season and was heavily instrumental in the signings of Kieran Trippier and Raul Jimenez.”
Martin Hardy at The Times has now reported: ‘Kieran Trippier’s transfer to Wolverhampton Wanderers is in jeopardy because of his anger at the sacking of Rob Edwards. Edwards played a major part in persuading Trippier, whose contract with Newcastle ends on June 30, to drop into the Championship with Wolves. His controversial sacking after only seven months in charge — something the former Middlesbrough manager only found about early on Thursday morning — has cast doubt on the right back’s move. The Portuguese coach César Peixoto is expected to replace Edwards at Molineux.’
The man from The Times reporting that: ‘Nathan Shi, Wolves’ executive chairman, and the club’s technical director Matt Jackson spoke with Trippier on Thursday morning. At that point the 35-year-old former England full back was shocked but still committed to the move and the deal he agreed. However, there was a change of heart on Thursday afternoon and now Trippier is exploring his legal position. It is thought Trippier has signed a pre-contract at Wolves — with a club video showing him putting pen to paper as he was shown around the Wolves training ground.’
Martin Hardy going on to say: ‘Wolves have not looked at the legality of the situation as yet but it is believed that they would not have announced the signing if it was something that could be cancelled easily. Trippier revealed when his transfer was announced that Edwards, who Wolves paid Middlesbrough £4million for in compensation last November, was a major reason he was prepared to move to Molineux. Trippier could yet rein in his anger and go through with the contract he has agreed but as of Thursday evening he was assessing his options. Rob Edwards was so blindsided by his dismissal that on Wednesday night, as rumours regarding his position circulated and Wolves were linked with Peixoto, the Gil Vicente manager, he was told his job was safe. He was dismissed early on Thursday and at lunchtime the club released a statement to confirm that.’
The man from The Times says above that surely Wolves wouldn’t have announced the Kieran Trippier signing if it was something that wasn’t legally binding by that point. Well, Wolves look to be such a chaotic shambles with how their owners and senior staff operate, you certainly wouldn’t rule out anything!
Looking back at what happened earlier this week at Molineux…
The official Wolves announcement late on Monday 8 June 2026: ‘Wolves’ rebuild ahead of the 150th anniversary season has begun with the capture of heralded full-back Kieran Trippier. The 35-year-old arrives on a two-year deal and becomes the first signing of the summer for Rob Edwards, as the club looks to bounce straight back to the Premier League.’
Wolves boss Rob Edwards having this to say about his signing of Kieran Trippier: “I’m so happy to bring him here. When we met, it was evident that he really wants to come to Wolves. We know what we’ve lacked this year, and we know what we need next year – experience, leadership, resilient characters and strong characters – that’s what we’re going to need in abundance, and Tripps ticks every box. From quality to experience to leadership to know how, and he also has a real hunger. He wants to help us get promoted again, and this is really something for us to achieve. He did have good options elsewhere, so for us to be able to get it over the line and get him in is a real coup. But it shows what a big club we are. We are a big draw and building on the Andre news, I don’t think we could have had a better start to the summer with what we’re trying to do.”
Then on Tuesday 9 June, Rob Edwards signed Raul Jimenez. The former Wolves striker returning to the club.
Head coach Rob Edwards declaring: “We’re delighted that Raul’s here and I know everyone will be very excited,” Edwards said. He’s another player with huge experience, but also knows Wolverhampton, he knows the area, knows the club, knows the DNA and the fabric of it, and knows what it means to play for Wolverhampton Wanderers. It’s going to be so much easier for me to be able to demand what I’m going to demand of the players, because he’s lived it, he knows the levels, so I’m very, very pleased. I was at the club when he was here before so was able to watch him and see what he did for this football club. Raul was a big part of our greatest times for a number of years. I know what he means to the football club and to the supporters, but this is not just an emotional signing. This is a signing because we really believe that he’s the right man to be able to help us achieve our aims, so we’re delighted to have him in.”
Interesting to see if Kieran Trippier does indeed now decide to try and get out of this move to Wolves.
