Newcastle United midfielder Travis Hernes has now signed a permanent deal with FC Groningen.
Now aged 20, the midfielder spent the 2025/26 season on loan at the Dutch club.
Newcastle United now making an official announcement on Wednesday morning, saying the loan move has become permanent for an undisclosed transfer fee.
United stating: ‘Travis Hernes spent the 2025/26 campaign on loan with Groningen, making 11 appearances in all competitions and helping the club secure a ninth-place finish in the league. He joined United in September 2023 from Shrewsbury Town where, aged 16, he scored on his professional debut during an EFL Trophy encounter against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The 20-year-old, who represents Norway at youth level, was named on the bench for the Magpies’ Emirates FA Cup victory against Fulham at Craven Cottage in January 2024 before featuring in a Premier League matchday squad for the first time during Newcastle’s 3-1 win against Aston Villa later that month.’
The media in Holland are reporting that FC Groningen triggered a purchase option in the original loan deal.
They claim Travis Hernes has signed a four year deal with the Eredivisie club.
The official NUFC statement signing off with: “Everybody at Newcastle United would like to thank Travis for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.”
