Sky Sports have revealed now that Arsenal have made no contact at all with Newcastle United regarding Bruno Guimaraes.
A media saga that started during the early stages of the 2026 World Cup finals.
Bruno Guimaraes with the Brazil squad when a month ago it was first claimed that Arsenal were trying to sign the Newcastle United captain.
Yet now just four weeks away from the new season kicking off, Sky Sports saying there has been zero contact made by Arsenal with Newcastle United.
Keith Downie covers United for Sky Sports and on Wednesday (22 July 2026) he has stated: “There are various reports out there saying Arsenal have made bids to Newcastle via intermediaries or middle-men. But as we sit here this morning, Arsenal have not contacted Newcastle.”
The man from Sky Sports adding: “As I understand it, Newcastle have actually reached out to Arsenal and said, ‘Look, are you serious about this? Are you trying to sign this player because we’ve had nothing from you? It’s all playing out with agents and I think it’s frustrating for Newcastle because without doubt it’s unsettling the player, hence why he has said he would like to explore his options elsewhere.”
It is really appalling how Arsenal have behaved and it appears clear that they are cynically trying to get Bruno Guimaraes on the cheap.
The Gunners did the same with Morgan Rogers, trying to bully Aston Villa into letting the England star leave for £80m when his market value has proved to be the £117m that Chelsea have just paid for him.
The Sky Sports reporter going on to say about Bruno Guimaraes and Arsenal: “What would be the tipping point for Newcastle? I think it has to start with an eight. He is going to be 29 soon. They got £100m for Sandro Tonali but Bruno is three years older, so that means his value is a little bit less. Newcastle are desperate not to sell him. They’ve said he’s not for sale. But once a player agitates to go, it’s really difficult to hold on to him. But Arsenal need to come to the table and offer, and only then will Newcastle take their interest seriously, once they make a concrete offer, not via any middle-men.”
For one thing, Bruno Guimaraes is less than two and a half years older than Sandro Tonali.
Most importantly though, you are not comparing like with like.
Bruno Guimaraes is a far better player than £100m Sandro Tonali and indeed £116m Elliot Anderson. Bruno scores and creates far more goals than this pair.
Newcastle United were also clearly comfortable with selling Tonali for £100m, as that has then helped them to pursue their own summer targets.
Newcastle United are clearly NOT comfortable with selling Bruno Guimaraes.
The value of something, the price of something, is what a seller is prepared to sell it for. The same with a football player. The value of Bruno Guimaraes to Newcastle United is far beyond what the value of Sandro Tonali was, Bruno is the captain and the heartbeat of the team, plus he was the team’s top Premier League scorer last season!
If Bruno Guimaraes does really want to leave and Arsenal or another club are willing to pay £100m, then I think we would all reluctantly accept that after more than four and a half years then it would be a deal that has to be accepted.
However, for Arsenal to act as they are, not even approaching Newcastle United, instead feeding to friendly media they will pay a disrespectful pittance of £50m or £60m to take away United’s key player. It is laughable.
