Barcelona have completed the signing of Anthony Gordon, it’s official now

Anthony Gordon is now officially a Barcelona player.

Friday 29 May seeing the transfer from Newcastle United completed. The official announcement delayed by hours reportedly due to a missing document on the Barcelona side of things.

An official club statement on Friday night declaring: ‘Newcastle United can confirm that Anthony Gordon has signed for La Liga champions Barcelona for a significant undisclosed fee.’

The club going on to say: ‘Anthony joined the Magpies in January 2023 from Everton and went on to make 152 appearances for the club in all competitions, scoring 39 goals. Anthony helped the team achieve UEFA Champions League qualification during his debut season but made his real breakthrough the following campaign, establishing himself as a key figure as he scored 11 times from 35 Premier League appearances. That form saw him gain senior international recognition, earning an England call-up for the March friendlies and making his debut at Wembley against Brazil that month. He then went on to represent his country at Euro 2024 after previously starring for the under-21s when he was named Player of the Tournament in the 2023 European Under-21 Championships.’

The club adding: ‘Anthony also played a pivotal role in the team’s run to the 2025 Carabao Cup final, which saw the club end a 70-year wait for a domestic trophy. He featured in every game on the road to Wembley and scored vital goals in both legs of the semi-final victory over Arsenal. In his final campaign as a Newcastle United player, Gordon finished as the team’s top scorer across all competitions with 17 goals, including ten in Europe.’

Anthony Gordon signed on at St James’ Park for a total of £45m, £40m plus £5m add-on back in January 2023.

Widespread reporting in the media ahead of tonight’s official unveiling that Barcelona had agreed an €80m (£69.3m) deal with Newcastle United, broken down as €70m (£60.64m) plus €10m (Approx £8.66m) in add-ons.

David Ornstein at The Athletic having previously revealed as well that there is also a sell-on clause in place, for Newcastle United to potentially benefit further if Anthony Gordon moves on from Barcelona.

Anthony Gordon set to fly off with the England squad on Monday (1 June) to the United States to prepare for the World Cup. A World Cup training camp awaiting, with a friendly against New Zealand in Tampa on Saturday 6 June and then another against Costa Rica on Wednesday 10 June. England play their first World Cup group match against Croatia on Wednesday 17 June.

There had been a clear determination from both Anthony Gordon and Newcastle United to get a deal done before the World Cup finals. United looking to act early themselves in terms of incoming deals this summer.
