Welcome to day 23 of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
We were left with 32 countries for the knockouts after 16 were eliminated in the group stage.
The 16 eliminated at the end of the group stage were: Czech Republic, Qatar, Haiti, Turkey, Curacao, Tunisia, New Zealand, Uruguay, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Jordan, Panama, Uzbekistan, Scotland, Iran and South Korea.
Now you can add Croatia, Algeria, Austria, DR Congo, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Senegal, Sweden, Ecuador, Ivory Coast, South Africa. Netherlands, Germany and Japan to that list as 13 of the 16 matches in the round of 32 have been played. Only three spots to fill now in the last 16.
Spain absolutely dominated Austria, winning 3-0 and it could and should have been a far wider winning scoreline. Spain look the most likely, to me anyway, to prevent France winning the tournament. I still make the French huge favourites but this Spanish side look like they are still to get out of third gear.
Oyarzabal scored twice and Porro the other. Players such as Yamal, Pedri and others are talents that can trouble any opposition. The Premier League’s best keeper David Raya can’t even get in this Spain side, whilst England have Jordan Pickford as number one…
Portugal made harder work of Croatia than they should have. Portugal dominating the first half but not creating a lot of chances against a defensive opposition, then Perisic giving Croatia a shock 53rd minute lead. Ronaldo equalised and then Goncalo Ramos got the winner in the fourth minute of added time. However, in the thirteenth minute of added time it was Croatia denied a late equaliser. A lengthy VAR check eventually gave offside but it all revolved around whether Matanovic touched the ball before Gvardiol scored. It was impossible to see whether the Croatia had or hadn’t touched the ball and the decision was made similar to Snicko in cricket, a chip inside the ball determines if a player has touched it and the technology said yes.
The thirteenth team to reach the last 16 are Switzerland. Algeria started well but then stunned on 10 minutes when a brilliant run from Newcastle United target Johan Manzambi ended with him presenting Embolo with a tap-in. Ndoye scored in the 46th minute and the Swiss cruised to victory.
The remaining three vacancies in the last 16 will be filled in the next 24 hours and Saturday also sees the first of the last 16 games kicking off.
It is now 249 goals in 85 matches and this 2026 World Cup not far short of averaging three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup but the chances of it happening are now reducing in the knockout stages. The closest since 1958 was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging 2.93 goals per game after the first 85 matches. There are now 19 games left to play (including the third-place play-off match).
Here are the last 32 round results and details of the next upcoming knockout games to be played, all kick-offs are shown as UK times and with the channel that is showing them.
