Former Newcastle United star takes over as manager of Arabian Falcons

Former Newcastle United midfielder Jonjo Shelvey has been appointed as manager of Arabian Falcons FC.

The ex-England international retiring from playing at the age of 34.

Jonjo Shelvey had been playing for third tier United Arab Emirates side Arabian Falcons FC but now he will be in charge of the team.

The former Newcastle United star declaring: “I’m excited to take on this challenge and lead the Falcons forward. We have a talented group and a clear vision to achieve promotion and build something special in Dubai.”

Jonjo Shelvey adding: “My ambition is to climb to the very top of management and this is the perfect project to prove myself and what I’m capable of.”

The midfielder started his playing career at Charlton Athletic and played in the top flight for Liverpool, Swansea, Newcastle and Nottingham Forest.

Jonjo Shelvey also featured for Blackpool, Caykur Rizespor, Eyupspor and briefly Burnley, before moving to the UAE.

The disastrous 2015/16 Steve McClaren season saw Jonjo Shelvey one of a number of players signed in January 2016 to try and help avoid relegation.

Mike Ashley belatedly sacking McClaren in March 2016 after yet another defeat, this time a 3-1 home loss to Eddie Howe and Bournemouth. Rafa Benitez doing a great job but he hadn’t been given enough time to turn it around.

Shelvey was with Newcastle United for seven years before Forest bought him in January 2023, the midfielder playing very few matches these past three years as his playing career quickly faded.
