Gavi was part of the Barcelona squad that travelled to Tyneside to face Newcastle United this past week.
However, it was made clear ahead of kick-off that he had still not been passed fit enough by the Barcelona medical team to play any part.
Today (Saturday) though, Barcelona have confirmed that Gavi has now been passed fit enough to return to the matchday squad, so will be available for the home La Liga match on Sunday afternoon and then Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday night.
Barcelona announcing on Saturday: ‘Some players seem to mean more than just talent on the pitch. Gavi is precisely one of those players for FC Barcelona fans. Energy, character and a pure feeling for what the Club represents. The blaugrana number six is back available for selection for FC Barcelona…’
The Barca official media going on to state: ‘The Andalusian had an arthroscopy on 23 September 2025 to solve a right knee internal meniscus injury. The operation involved sewing the meniscus to preserve it, which meant around four to five months recovery time. The midfielder has followed the recovery process to the letter and has now reached a stage whereby he can return…An appearance on the pitch [against Sevilla] would see him back playing after 205 days out.
After six months without competitive football, it remains to be seen exactly what part Gavi will play against Sevilla on Sunday, then Newcastle United on Wednesday.
As a reminder, this was the Barcelona squad that travelled to Tyneside:
Goalkeepers
Juan Garcia, Szczesny, Kocine
Defenders
João Cancelo, Ronald Araújo, Pau Cubarsi, Gerard Martin, Eric Garcia, Cortés, Xavi Espart
Midfielders
Gavi, Pedri, Fermín López, Marc Casadó, Dani Olmo, Marc Bernal, Tomy
Attackers
Ferran Torres, Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Marcus Rashford, Roony Bardghji
Missing from the travelling squad were the likes of Andreas Christensen, Frenkie De Jong, Jules Kounde and Alejandro Balde.
Hansi Flick had his pre-Sevilla press conference on Saturday: “I’m very happy for Gavi. I hope he can play a few minutes tomorrow [against Sevilla], but we have to take it step by step. He has a long career ahead of him and we need to manage him properly.”
Hansi Flick stating: “We have played four matches in eleven days and our options for making changes were limited. On top of that, some players are coming back from injury. The team’s attitude has been very good despite having had very intense matches lately. All the players who train with us can play and can start. Xavi Espart gives us an extra option with Kounde and Balde out.”
Barcelona are four points clear of Real Madrid at the top of La Liga, they face 14th in the table Sevilla on Sunday and then 15th placed Rayo Vallecano seven days later, in between it is of course Newcastle United in the Champions League on Wednesday.
Hansi Flick commenting: “This week we have three matches. We’re playing at home and we want to win all three. It won’t be easy, but we have to play with confidence and conviction.”
