We asked Mark Jankowski to give us his match ratings and player comments after Crystal Palace 2 Newcastle United 1.
Ramsdale 8
He made an incredible double save in the first half to keep the game at 0-0.
He generally looked assured on the ball and claimed a few high crosses into the box.
I don’t think he could do much about either goal and went the right way on the penalty.
Livramento 6
He looked like he had lots of energy getting up and down the right-hand side for the majority of the game.
But once Palace started to gain momentum in the second half, we could have done with more control from the right back position. Too often the ball was given away cheaply.
Thiaw 6
Played a pretty good game until Mateta came on but then looked physically bullied a little bit.
The only real bad games Thiaw has had this season has been when he’s come up against a physically stronger striker who looks to initiate contact early.
Something for him to improve on for next season.
Botman 5
I’m docking Botman a point for the absolute brainless shirt pull in the dying moments which he gave away the penalty.
He played a relatively good game up until that point but threw away Newcastle’s chance of a point with his brainless decision.
Hall 7
Was probably Newcastle’s best player once again.
Defended calmly and stepped well into midfield when needed.
He was linking up pretty well with Anthony Gordon in the first half and I’m not sure why we abandoned that approach in the second.
Miley 6
I’d have probably scored Miley higher if Eddie Howe had taken him off when he should have done.
The young man looked like he ran out of steam around the hour mark and was largely chasing ghosts for the last 30 minutes.
Before that he looked good on the ball and was heavily involved in our opener.
Tonali 6
Looked incredibly influential up until around the time of Palace’s first goal.
After Palace scored he found the game more difficult to assert himself on and probably could have done with more legs around him sooner.
Joelinton 6
Joelinton played okay and was as committed as ever.
Unfortunately, he conceded a clear yellow card foul on Mateta and as such will now miss our next two games.
Murphy 5
If I was only grading Jacob Murphy around the box then he’d score a lot higher.
Too many times this season he gives away needless loose passes when trying to play one-twos with his teammates in our own half.
However, when he’s around the box, he looks like one of our most dangerous players always trying to whip an early ball in. Wasted a delightful opportunity in the first half.
Osula 6
Similar to Lewis Miley, I would have scored Osula higher had Howe subbed him off at the correct time.
He faded badly as the second half went on, but for the most part in the first half was one of our most dangerous players, looking to run in behind constantly and unsettling the palace back line.
Initially it looked like he scored a very scrappy goal but on further inspection it was a very smart finish.
Gordon 6
He looked incredibly dangerous in the first half constantly getting at his defender who somehow managed to avoid a booking all half.
He was largely anonymous in the second half as our play seemed to ignore the left hand side entirely.
He was our first player removed from the game by Howe. He wouldn’t have been my choice to come off first.
Subs
Barnes 5
Was largely ineffective once he came on the pitch.
Barnes did manage to get into a couple of good positions but his final ball was lacking.
There was one moment in particular where he had two players in the middle and pulled it behind both of them to let a good opportunity fizzle out.
