Newcastle United are set to take their summer spending beyond the £287m mark.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo is now on Tyneside and after his medical and final formalities are completed, the exciting 21-year-old attacking player with electric pace will be officially announced.
The Belgium international flew into Newcastle last night ahead of deadline day and is set to sign in a deal that is reported to be a £55m one in total.
Matias Fernandez-Pardo will become the eighth Newcastle United summer transfer window signing.
This swiftly follows Nico Gonzalez signed in a £52m deal from Manchester City less than a week ago.
The question to be posed: Have these two late signings now helped take this Newcastle United transfer window into the realms of now becoming the greatest in the club’s history?
Newcastle United transfer window summer 2026 incomings
Goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen was first to arrive this summer, the 20-year-old arriving from Stade de Reims in a reported £24.6m deal.
Then 20-year-old winger Bazoumana Toure came in for £43m from Hoffenheim.
Sean Steur next, £23m invested in the 18-year-old midfielder.
Then 20-year-old midfielder Aladji Bamba signed from Monaco in a £35.5m deal.
Before a £25.7m contract release clause was triggered for Lukas Hornicek.
Which was followed by Amar Dedic reunited with his former RB Salzburg boss Matthias Jaissle in a £29.5m deal.
Last Wednesday we then saw midfielder Nico Gonzalez recruited from Manchester City as a reported £52m signing.
Then Monday brought news that Newcastle United had reached agreement with Lille to sign Matias Fernandez-Pardo and the exciting 21-year-old, who can play all across the frontline, was then seen arriving at Newcastle Airport ahead of his medical and signing off his deal. That imminent signing reported as a £55m deal in total, with £51.4m guaranteed transfer fee plus some potential future add-ons.
Adding those up, it will be a summer 2026 spend of around £287.5m by Newcastle United. Even if the reality is that some of those transfer fees may be a little lower than what has been reported, it is still a stunning Newcastle United transfer window.
Whilst it is very early days and only in time will we really see the true impact of these eight new signings (maybe one more as today as well as Matias Fernandez-Pardo…?), one thing does appear almost certain. That this summer transfer window has seen a record spend for Newcastle United! Around £255m was committed in summer 2025 on Nick Woltemade, Malick Thiaw, Aaron Ramsdale, Yoane Wissa, Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey. That now set to be exceeded when the Matias Fernandez-Pardo signing is concluded.
With the money generated by the Isak, Longstaff and Kelly sales in summer 2025, it was actually ‘only’ a net spend of around £100m a year ago.
The sales of Tonali (£100m), Bruno (£75m) and Gordon (£70m) means that for rough figures we are looking at this summer 2026 Newcastle United transfer window as one that will have what appears to be no more than a £40m net spend. With rumours that Nick Woltemade could be sold today, Newcastle United could even potentially end this window with a small net profit on transfers in and out, despite committing close to £290m! Late Monday saw Sky Sports reveal that the club had turned down bids for both Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock, though I wouldn’t rule out at least one more first team squad player getting sold today as well as Big Nick, plus Nick Pope very likely to find a new club as well before 11pm tonight.
A delicate balance as the UEFA SCR restrictions have ensured Newcastle United had to take extreme care with how they handled this transfer window AND the wage bill. The young promising signings brought in this summer will generally be on significantly lower wages than the United top earners such as Bruno, Tonali, Trippier and Gordon who have all left, as well as Ramsdale, Targett, Ruddy and Krafth also off the wage bill now.
