Only hours after attending the Newcastle United v Manchester City FA Cup match last month, Joey Barton was arrested and then charged with Section 18 wounding with intent.

At the time, a Police spokesperson stating: ‘Emergency services were called to Fairway to reports of a man having been assaulted near to Huyton and Prescot Golf Club. The victim was taken to hospital for assessment of serious injuries to his face and body. He is in a serious but stable condition in hospital. Two men were arrested. Detectives have now charged the following men with Section 18 wounding with intent: Joseph Anthony Barton, 43, of Widnes. Gary O’Grady, 50, of Huyton.’

Moving forward to the present day and on Tuesday (7 April 2026), Joey Barton has appeared at Liverpool Crown Court by video link from Liverpool prison, for a plea and trial preparation hearing.

BBC News now reporting: ‘Along with his co-defendant, 50-year-old Gary O’Grady, Joey Barton is charged with inflicting grievous bodily harm (GBH) with intent on former non-league football manager Kevin Lynch, 51 at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club on 8 March. Barton, of Widnes, was remanded into custody, and faces a seven-day trail starting 1 September. An earlier court hearing was told the defendants had been drinking with Lynch at Huyton and Prescot Golf Club before the alleged attack. Lynch, a former non-league football manager and founder of special education school NexGen Academy, was said to have suffered serious injuries to his eye.’

Joey Barton has pleaded not guilty but faces a summer in jail on remand, as he awaits the trial in September.
