John Anderson has been talking about the situation Matthias Jaissle finds himself in with Newcastle United.
A summer of so much turmoil and transformation at St James’ Park.
Yet despite all of that and the fact he was only appointed two and a half weeks before the season started, Matthias Jaissle led Newcastle United to three victories and two draws in the opening five matches.
On Monday night the unbeaten run ended.
Another three injury blows with Anthony Elanga and Jacob Ramsey ruled out before kick-off, before then inside seven minutes Nico Gonzalez picking up a concussion that eventually saw him forced off after 19 minutes as he clearly couldn’t continue.
On top of all the other significant issues Matthias Jaissle had taken on, now finding himself without seven first team squad players due to injuries.
Reflecting on what he watched on Monday night, former United defender John Anderson speaking to BBC Newcastle: “You have to say the best side won. In that first half, Leeds just totally dominated. They won every second ball and they were better in every aspect of the game. It was a hard watch in that first half. Newcastle weren’t winning second balls, Leeds were picking everything up, winning the 50/50s. They got themselves 3-0 up and I suppose at half-time the game was really over because, on the evidence of that first half, it was difficult to see how we were going to get back into it.”
John Anderson going on to say: “The game got scrappy in the second half. Leeds sat back and defended a lot deeper than they had in the first half. We had a little bit of the ball but we didn’t do a great deal with it. It’s the first setback that the manager has had and it’s back to the drawing board. Yes, it’s great when things are going well and you’re winning games. It’s how you react to that setback. We’ll find out soon enough, come Saturday afternoon. You want to see a reaction. Yet again, we’ve conceded far too any shots and didn’t have enough shots.”
It is now Hull City on Saturday, the promoted side unbeaten so far in the Premier League. Having defeated Man U and Coventry, then drawing against Villa and Chelsea.
The Newcastle United Head Coach has already said that he expects none of his injured players to be back in time for Saturday, John Anderson looking ahead to this next match: “Matthias Jaissle needs to find the right blend. At this moment in time, he doesn’t seem to have it. We have been well beaten. No real excuses, you’ve just got to hold your hands up and say the better side won and they won very, very comfortably.”
A huge match at St James’ Park and then a much-needed 23 days gap before the next game at Coventry away. Matthias Jaissle at last with some significant time to work with his squad and hopefully get some of those key injured players back available.
