It has now been revealed that Newcastle United are looking to sell Yoane Wissa.

The Athletic report that their information is that NUFC plan to move the striker on after less than a year at the club, having eventually arrived at St James’ Park on 1 September 2025, in the very final minutes of the transfer window.

Chris Waugh, who covers Newcastle United for The Athletic, states that the sale of Yoane Wissa will be part of a planned major overhaul of the team/squad this summer, with a lot of movement in and out of the club.

Waugh though adds that the 29 year old forward wants to stay on Tyneside and have the chance to prove himself.

The Newcastle United owners insisted that Alexander Isak would not be sold to Liverpool but then at the very last minute of the summer 2025 window, they performed a total u-turn and did sell him, after Isak had been on strike across the summer and refusing to even train with the Newcastle United squad.

That endless delay in decisively dealing with the Alexander Isak situation, meant that Brentford totally had the Newcastle United owners over a barrel, with NUFC ending up having to commit to £50m for Yoane Wissa, plus potential future add-ons of £5m.

This shambles then took a further spectacular nightmare turn, when before he had even kicked a ball for Newcastle United, Wissa picked up a serious knee injury when playing for DR Congo in a World Cup group qualifier.

The serious injury, zero pre-season (Yoane Wissa had also gone on strike at Brentford to try and force a move to Newcastle) and then a struggle to get up to full fitness and establish himself in a full on season where United were playing every midweek and little time on the training ground, has meant Wissa largely a bystander this season.

The striker has only started eight Newcastle United matches and made 16 sub appearances in all competitions, in the Premier League playing only 454 minutes in total.

Chris Waugh giving this overview: ‘Yoane Wissa was not the priority target to replace Callum Wilson, but after failed attempts to lure strikers including Joao Pedro, Hugo Ekitike and Jorgen Strand Larsen to Tyneside, Newcastle relented at the last and met Brentford’s take-to-or-leave-it asking price…Wissa returned from his knee injury quicker than expected and decided not to represent the Democratic Republic of Congo at this year’s Africa Cup of Nations so he could focus on being fully fit for Newcastle and his country’s World Cup play-off against Jamaica in March.’

The man from The Athletic stating that a key part of this summer’s transfer plan is to: ‘sign a new striker, a search which has ramped up in recent weeks.’

Waugh points out that if they do sell Yoane Wissa, then naturally Newcastle United won’t be able to get back the full £50m+ that they committed to the striker, then going on to add: ‘Wissa’s arrival late in the window was a direct response to Alexander Isak’s sale to Liverpool, which was also finalised on September 1 after a summer-long saga, and came at a time when Newcastle did not have a chief executive or sporting director in place to oversee things — David Hopkinson and Ross Wilson have since filled those roles respectively.’

The Newcastle United owners are flying in this week and set to have a series of key meetings at Matfen Hall, to discuss plans to progress the club on and off the pitch.

Hopefully valuable lessons learnt after last summer by the Newcastle United owners, with this summer 2026 transfer window now at least having a CEO and Sporting Director in place at NUFC.
