Nico Gonzalez has moved on from Manchester City.

Manchester City have now released an official statement after the sale of the midfielder after his departure in what has been reported as a £52m deal by Sky Sports, £48m guaranteed and another £4m in potential future add-ons.
The Etihad club with an official statement that begins: ‘Nico Gonzalez has left Manchester City to join Newcastle United on a permanent deal. It brings to an end an 18-month stay at the Etihad for the Spanish midfielder. In that time, the 24-year-old went on to make 59 appearances for the Club across all competitions, scoring four goals.’
Manchester City going on to add: ‘Nico also played his part in helping City win both the 2026 Carabao Cup and 2026 FA Cup final, memorably scoring a stunning winner in last term’s FA Cup semi-final against Southampton. A technically proficient deep-lying defensive midfield operator, Nico joined City from FC Porto in January 2025 and proved a hugely popular and highly-respected member of the first team squad. Now, however, he is to embark on a fresh challenge in the Premier League with Newcastle United.’
Nico Gonzalez telling official Man City media: “It has been a privilege to be part of Manchester City. It’s hard to understand from the outside what an amazing club this is. The management, the players, the coaches, the staff and the fans make it incredibly special. It really has been an honour to play for this team. I’ve loved my time here, but I have a desire to play more often. I can honestly say, though, I leave with nothing but love and gratitude for City. I have learned so much in my time here from working alongside some of the finest players and coaches in the game. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all my team-mates, the staff and the City fans who have been so supportive and helpful to me throughout my time in Manchester. I want to wish the team nothing but the best looking to this season and in the future.”
Former Newcastle United star Hugo Viana is these days the Sporting Director at Man City: “Nico has been the consummate professional throughout his time at Manchester City. He always set the highest standards both on and off the pitch and he can also be proud of having played a very big part in both of our Cup successes last season. We would like to thank Nico for his contribution to the Club, and we wish him the very best as he now embarks on the next chapter of his career.”
