It has now been revealed that Newcastle United are in talks to sign Carl Rushworth.
This news coming via The Mail on Thursday.
They report that as well as talks over Carl Rushworth, Newcastle United are also continuing in discussions over James Trafford.
The Mail reporting that Newcastle United are determined to drive ahead and bring in more new signings as soon as possible ahead of the new season.
So therefore their intention is to sign only one of these two goalkeepers, not both of them. Having missed out on a couple of transfer targets as well as the three they have actually signed this summer, United determined to get one or the other.
A move that would presumably see Nick Pope then be sold, with French Under 21 international Ewen Jaouen as initially back up to whichever goalkeeper is signed.
England will be flying home at the weekend from the World Cup and so James Trafford would then be able to compete any transfer if as expected he leaves Manchester City this summer to become a number one keeper, whether at Newcastle United or elsewhere.
With the ongoing interest in the Man City keeper we know all about Trafford but to be honest I didn’t know who Carl Rushworth was.
When I searched online for him, I then found out I did know who he was to an extent, as I’d watch him play a few times last season on TV.
Carl Rushworth is aged 25 and has been with Brighton since 2019 but never made a first team appearance for them but has made over 200 first team appearances on loan at other clubs.
His most recent loan was at Coventry City last season as he played in all 46 Championship games as they finished top and had the best defensive record of all, only 45 conceded in the 46 matches.
The Mail say that Brighton have rejected two offers of over £20m for Carl Rushworth this summer and reading elsewhere, it appears for sure Coventry City were one of the two clubs to put in offers.
An England Under 21 international, Carl Rushworth would likely be a bit cheaper than James Trafford who currently has the higher profile BUT I think either of them would represent what looks a very good signing if agreement is reached by Newcastle United for one or the other.
