Welcome to day ten of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group automatically going through and the eight best performing teams who finish third in their groups.
So only 16 of the 48 countries will be knocked out after the 72 group games have all played out, with the other 32 teams going through to the knockout stages.
We have now reached a point where we are more than a third of the way through the 72 group games with 32 played. That means 72 games in total still to go when you include the knockout stages.
The USA joined co-hosts Mexico as definite qualifiers for the last 32 knockout stages. The USA are also guaranteed to top Group D now.
An Aussie own goal and a second from Freeman just before half-time set the USA (Image from the match is above) up for a 2-0 victory over Australia. That second goal controversially given despite an apparent offside.
The other second round of games match in Group D saw Paraguay win 1-0 against Turkey. Turkey had 32 shots and 12 corners but just like a very similar opening match they couldn’t score, despite dominating. Paraguay took a second minute lead and then defended for their lives, especially so when Miguel Almiron made World Cup history.
The former Newcastle United star becoming the first ever player to be sent off at a World Cup finals for covering his mouth when talking to an opposition player. That incident before the break but Turkey unable to qualify and now eliminated. Paraguay and Australia play each other on Friday in the early hours (UK time) to decide who finishes second and third in the group.
In Group C on Friday, a nightmare start for Scotland. Saibari giving Morocco the lead inside two minutes. Steve Clarke’s side battled throughout but a lack of quality in attacking areas especially was all too apparent. Scotland not having a single shot on target the entire game. Former Newcastle United defender Grant Hanley was in the starting eleven.
The other match in Group C saw Bruno Guimaraes impress for Brazil as they comfortably beat Haiti 3-0.
Brazil are now effectively through to the knockout stages as they lead Group C with four points, Haiti now eliminated.
It is now 96 goals in 32 matches and this 2026 World Cup still on track to average three or more goals per game for the first time since the 1958 World Cup. The closest was the 1970 Mexico World Cup that averaged 2.97 goals per match, this 2026 World Cup now averaging exactly 3.00 goals per game.
