It ended Newcastle 0 Everton 1.
Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.
An interesting game at St James’ Park…
Plenty to talk about after this Premier League game.
Newcastle United losing to the only goal of the match in the 49th minute.
On this occasion it is David Punton:
POSITIVES
Narrow margin
If you want to take some kind of positive, then Newcastle United only lost narrowly.
On another night we may have come away with a point.
Trial by television
You had to laugh at the make up of the Sky Sports coverage of this game.
A Sunderland supporting presenter and two Evertonians as guests to analyse the match.
Nice and balanced then.
Marginal improvement
The second half was at least better than the first. It’s not saying much but they did improve a bit.
What we need to see is a big uplift and reaction in the next game.
NEGATIVES
On the manager
Matthias Jaissle has to shoulder a lot of the blame.
He was dancing on the head of a pin in the post-match presser.
The claim was that instructions not to kick it long were not followed by his players.
This is not a good sign.
His team looks soft, nervy and lacking in ideas.
The club has spent big on a rebuild and many of those players are not getting a look in in at the moment.
He has made them toothless in front of goal and easily beaten.
How much longer can we go on like this?
Profligacy
Yoane Wissa went for glory when it was easier to pass it and give Jacob Ramsey a tap in.
It was a night when chances couldn’t be taken.
If this carries on then we really will be in deep trouble come Xmas.
You couldn’t make it up
The free-kick that led to the Everton goal was farcical.
It almost added insult to injury in the way that we lost this game.
Speaking of which, Jacob Ramsey’s red card rounded off a terrible night for us. What was he thinking?
The fixtures we have got coming up in the coming weeks all look exceptionally perilous.
