Troy Deeney explains why he has chosen Harvey Barnes for his Premier League team of the week and then the full eleven (twelve) are listed below:
“Gets a goal. Good finish into that far corner as well. He’s been excellent and not spoken about a lot. Anthony Elanga and all the others get the headlines but Barnes has been fantastic.”
I would say more of a brilliant finish than a “good” one and that is now three goals in the opening four games of the season for Harvey Barnes.
The winger has started all three of Newcastle’s Premier League matches and came off the bench to score the two goals that won the game for United against West Brom in the League Cup.
The dilemma with Harvey Barnes is always the feeling that he invariably looks more effective when coming off the bench. In all competitions last season he scored 16 goals and got six assists, including scoring seven and getting one assist in the Premier League. However, Barnes only started 19 EPL matches last season and came off the bench in another 18.
Harvey Barnes is the best and most natural finisher at the club (unless one of the summer signings proves me wrong) but to me he often finds it easier to get into scoring positions when coming off the bench against opposition players who aren’t as quick as when they started the match.
Barnes isn’t slow but not electric quick, nor has he got better then decent dribbling skills, his superpower is his finishing and hence the dilemma of whether he is more effective coming off the bench and potentially able to get into more scoring positions despite spending less minutes on the pitch.
It will be interesting to see as the season goes on, exactly who Matthias Jaissle prefers in the wide positions. Elanga has started the season well and Bazoumana Toure is being given time to settle in. Then you have Matias Fernandez-Pardo now coming in, who can play all across the frontline, plus Jacob Murphy also still at St James’ Park with the Head Coach turning down a £15m bid from Nottingham Forest.
