Breathtaking Hamburger SV tribute to Kevin Keegan

Kevin Keegan stunned the footballing world in 1977 when moving from Liverpool to Hamburger SV.

The Anfield talisman had just helped the scousers win yet another league title and their first ever European Cup.

Kevin Keegan was never scared of a challenge and Hamburger SV had not finished higher than sixth in the league in Germany for almost two decades.

The England and Liverpool star had negotiated a maximum transfer fee in 1976, if he ever left Anfield.

That Β£500,000 maximum transfer fee was still though a new British transfer record and almost doubled the German transfer record.

Despite a difficult first season in Germany with Hamburger SV only finishing 10th, Kevin Keegan still won the European Footballer of the Year award for 1978.

Amazingly, Kevin Keegan won the European Footballer of the Year award once again in 1979 AND led Hamburger SV to an astonishing league title win.

His third and final season in Germany saw Hamburger SV come within a whisker of winning the European Cup, losing 1-0 to Nottingham Forest in the final.

No surprise then that more than 45 years later, Kevin Keegan is still a club legend at his former German club. The club where the fans christened him β€˜Mighty Mouse’ due to his stunning contribution to their success back in the late 1970s.

Sunday saw the first Hamburger SV home league match of the season against Mainz.

That giving Kevin Keegan’s former club their chance to honour this Hamburger SV legend with a breathtaking Tifo:

What followed on the pitch didn’t quite live up to that pre-match display, with Hamburger SV hammered 5-0 at home by Mainz.
