Jamie Carragher talking to Sky Sports following the excellent Newcastle United performance and victory at Tottenham: “The thing that has really impressed me today with Newcastle United is how they have played [against Tottenham]. A lot was made of how they did last week against Liverpool but I was coming into this [Tottenham] game thinking it would be a tough game for them.”
The former Liverpool star going on to add about Newcastle United: “Last week [at St James’ Park], I felt they were living off the emotion of the occasion with the tributes to Kevin Keegan, Alexander Isak was coming back, the crowd were against him. They had been decimated over the summer and it was almost an ‘us against the world’ kind of feeling.”
Jamie Carragher continuing: “Newcastle United played on the counter [against Liverpool], they didn’t have too much of the ball and sometimes it can be easy to play in games like that with that sort of performance. But they weren’t in possession a lot and didn’t create a lot. The two goals were on the counter and great from their point of view.”
Jamie Carragher then contrasting that with Newcastle United and their performance against Spurs: “But today has been a performance. They have been on the ball, they have had ideas, there has been a game plan with the ball. You have seen the movements they’ve made, getting in behind the Spurs full-backs, really impressive. In Elanga and Wissa, it’s like two new players!”
A couple of points.
It is easy to overlook the fact that Matthias Jaissle was officially appointed by Newcastle United on 5 August, only 18 days later having such a tough introduction to Premier League with Liverpool the opposition.
I think what these two opening Premier League matches have shown, is that Matthias Jaissle is very comfortable with having very different approaches to matches depending on the opposition/circumstances. In both these games I thought Newcastle United were very good overall and ticked so many boxes both going forward and in defence.
