It had been over a decade since Hull fans visited St James’ Park.

It is actually exactly 12 years to the day (counting back from today, Sunday 20 September 2026) when Hull fans last visited Tyneside. Papiss Cisse scored twice for United in a 2-2 draw against the Tigers on 20 September 2014.

So Saturday they returned to St James’ Park and Hull fans saw their side go two down inside seven minutes.

United controlling the first three-quarters of the match and should have had the win banked but when they failed to get the three or four goals they should have done, it leaves open the possibility of a comeback.

So when Newcastle United began to tire and such limited options on the bench due to the injury crisis, Hull fans saw their team get a goal and the final quarter of the match a case of United battling to try and keep safe the three points…

Hull Fans commenting via their Not 606 Hull City message board:

Ahead of the match, they ran a poll for Hull fans to vote on one of three predictions:

52% Hull City not lose
36% Hull City win
12% Newcastle United win

Now for the post-match comments…

‘We put on a good show, but got beaten by the better side on the day. There’s no shame in that, and it’s certainly something people are going to have to learn to live with, especially this season.’

‘It’s difficult to explain that first seven minutes. We were just cut open twice by Newcastle passing into the box, and no one put in a challenge.’

‘To be fair, for that period, Newcastle were very good and all teams I have seen this season would have struggled. Not many would have collected themselves and come close to recovery. As is natural, we have focused heavily on our performance.’

‘Having reflected on yesterdays game, if we play like that, sometimes we will prevail, sometimes not. But i’ll take that and we should be okay.’

‘Great game. Pity we lost, but don’t mind that. We had to lose at some point.

For me this game sums up where we are in this league. Capable of competing and certainly not out of our depth.’

‘Newcastle fans on the train on the way home said they felt we were unlucky and they were impressed with us second half imposing ourselves on them. Said they think we’ll stay up.’

‘Were you on the 18.01 out of Newcastle. Coach B?

Exactly the same conversations were taking place.

I had my hand shook by a number of Newcastle supporters who complimented us on our performance.’

‘Seen lots of praise for the 3000 odd that made the trip, well done to you all done us proud.’

‘As one Geordie said in the traffic jam “ Canny side Hull like”

First 45 We looked slow and lead footed.

Second hall only one team innit.’

‘Telling that Newcastle targeted our right hand side from minute one.’

‘Yes very odd that Newcastle chose to focus on their left side and two strongest players, Hall and Barnes, rather than funnel their efforts through a kid playing out of position and Murphy.’

‘Barnes terrifies a lot of defenders.’

‘Barnes is a class act.’

‘I was sitting at the very front of our stand and the support was first class. Credit to everybody that travelled in full voice.

Another gripe was our coaching staff stalling our momentum twice getting booked before our set pieces meaning the ref was stopping us from taking them whilst he booked somebody on the bench.’

‘It’s difficult to explain that first seven minutes. We were just cut open twice by Newcastle passing into the box and no one putting a challenge in. This from a back five who’ve looked so assured so far this season.’

‘We’ve got to get use to playing well and not winning.’

‘This lot had a CL team a couple of seasons ago. I’m going to stick my neck out and say we won’t finish too far behind them in midtable.’

‘With Arsenal dropping points it’s disappointing we’ve not been able to capitalise but it’s a long season. There will be ups and downs along the way.’

‘Thomas. What an utterly moronic thing to do to stretch out and try to drag their man down.’

‘I was hoping we’d get a least a point at Sid James’ Park today.’

‘Tell ya what, after that horrible start we did bloody well there and second half i though we were excellent.’

‘That could have been a real confidence shock after 2nil , but we slowly clawed our way into the game , creating chances & half chances till the break , then when Steur went off & we brought on our subs we just looked better everywhere , unlucky not to get on the ball of the countless half clearances from a nervous Newcastle defence n all.’

‘Can’t be having arguments between our own staff. Get that sorted behind closed doors quickly.’

‘It was Newcastle staff.’

‘Good chance to win given the personnel they had out. We definitely improved 2nd half, but I think in part that was down to Newcastle as they looked so leggy. GK save of the penalty completely changed the momentum of the game’

‘Great game tbf throughly enjoyed myself’

‘Not sure how we’ve lost that.

I was surprised when I saw the team, especially as New Castle were always going to be hard to beat.’
