I was having a look at the official UEFA site.
Newcastle United having played Barcelona this week.
One stat caught my eye.
‘Newcastle United have lost only four of their last 37 home European matches (Won 25 Drawn 8 Lost 4).’
My first thought was, surely they have got this wrong.
Surely it sounds too good to be true.
So I went back and looked.
Following the Barcelona 1-1 match, these last 37 Newcastle United European home matches, take us back 23 years.
Since Newcastle United lost 1-0 against Partizan Belgrade in the Champions League third qualifying round in 2003, these are the 37 European matches at St James’ Park:
2003/04

Newcastle 5 NAC Breda 0
Newcastle 1 Basel 0
Newcastle 3 Valarenga 1
Newcastle 4 Mallorca 1
Newcastle 2 PSV 1

So there you have it, almost a quarter of a century of home European matches at St James’ Park and a record in that time of Played 37 Won 25 Drawn 7 Lost 4
Hopefully we get a chance in the very near future to extend this European home run….
