Newcastle United have signed Nico Gonzalez.
The official announcement made on Wednesday night just before kick-off against West Brom in the Carabao Cup.
The Nico Gonzalez signing having been teased with a 7pm social media post by the club.
The not so subtle club media post with a short video, which includes a Spanish flag and in Spanish somebody saying…
“Por favor, estad en vuestros asientios diez minutos antes de que empiece el partido.”
This translates to….
“Please be in your seats ten minutes before the match starts.”
Sure enough, Nico Gonzalez appearing on the pitch to take the applause of the Newcastle United fans before kick-off.
The official club statement beginning: ‘Newcastle United are delighted to announce the signing of Spanish midfielder Nico González on a long-term deal from Manchester City. The 24-year-old, a product of Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy, will wear shirt number six and becomes the seventh senior addition to the squad this summer.’
Then going on to say: ‘Nico joined Barcelona’s youth set-up aged 11 after starting his football journey with Montañeros in his hometown, A Coruña. He represented Barcelona B from the age of 17 and went on to make his first-team debut on the opening day of the 2021/22 La Liga season, replacing Sergio Busquets as a second-half substitute. Nico joined Valencia on loan the following season, before making a permanent switch to Portuguese giants FC Porto in summer 2023.’
As usual the club not revealing the transfer fee but Sky Sports had reported it as a £52m deal, £48m guaranteed and up to £4m more in potential future add-ons.
