An official Victor Munoz statement has been released by Liverpool.
The Anfield club revealing that they have now completed the signing of the 22-year-old winger.
The official statement beginning: ‘Liverpool FC have agreed a deal to sign Victor Munoz from Osasuna, subject to a successful work permit application and international clearance. The forward, who is currently on World Cup duty with Spain, completed a medical at the country’s base in Tennessee in the USA and has put pen to paper on a long-term contract.’
Newcastle United had been widely expected to sign Victor Munoz but instead he is off to Merseyside.
The Liverpool statement continuing: ‘Munoz is the first new addition since the arrival of head coach Andoni Iraola and will link up with his new teammates later this summer after his participation in the tournament with his national team has concluded. The 22-year-old has two caps for Spain and marked his debut against Serbia in March with a goal. The international recognition came after an outstanding season with Osasuna in which he made 34 appearances, scoring seven times and claiming five assists in all competitions.’
Earlier on Thursday, Sky Sports revealed how things had played out regarding Newcastle United, Liverpool and Victor Munoz in the lead up to the eventual transfer decision.
Keith Downie covers Newcastle United for Sky Sports and he revealed that Newcastle United had a fee of £29m (+£4.3m) accepted by Osasuna and that the player had agreed personal terms and told NUFC that he wanted to sign. Agent fees had also been agreed.
Downie adding that: “Newcastle had the wheels in motion for a medical over in the US and were on the verge of completing a deal. But they were instructed to wait over the last 24 hours by the player’s representatives, and Liverpool swooped.”
The Sky Sports reporter also revealing: “Liverpool had always been at the table for Victor Munoz so they didn’t come in last minute, but agreed £34.5m release clause (two instalments) and Munoz chose Anfield.”
