Nico Gonzalez looking set to be the seventh Newcastle United signing of the summer.
The media unanimous on Monday morning that a deal is moving close for the Manchester City midfielder.
Luke Edwards of The Telegraph:
‘BREAKING Newcastle United are closing in on the signing of Nico Gonzalez from Manchester City. Until it’s done it’s not done but growing confidence a deal can be done. Framework in place’
Mark Douglas at The i paper:
‘Newcastle edging closer on midfielder deal
Work continues on NUFC £50m Nico Gonzalez deal with fresh hope
‘Several’ incomings wanted
Idea to pair with ‘special’ Lewis Miley.’
Keith Downie of Sky Sports:
”Newcastle United are advancing in talks with Man City over a deal for Nico González, and there is hope a deal can be reached this week.
Gonzalez is valued around the £50m mark.
The 24-year-old was an unused substitute in Man City’s win over Bournemouth yesterday and is open to the proposal of a move to St James’ Park.
Matthias Jaissle wants to add a holding midfielder with PL experience before the window closes.’
Craig Hope from The Mail:
”NEW: Positive noises overnight on Nico Gonzalez to Newcastle. Not all done yet (and NUFC have been here before this summer) but there’s now hope inside St James’ Park that this deal will happen. Crucially, as reported below, the player is open to the move.’
On Saturday it was reported that Manchester City had told Nico Gonzalez he could leave, the Etihad club understood to have been keeping hold of the Spanish midfielder until they had at least one of their midfield targets over the line.
On Sunday, Man City did indeed land one of their key targets, a deal worth 100m euros (£85.6m) to sign 18-year-old Lille midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi. Manchester City having been kept waiting but Bouaddi now set to complete his protracted move to England with Lille accepting an initial fee of £81.4m, plus £4.2m in add-ons.
That domino falling will now see Nico Gonzalez allowed to leave the Etihad.
Rodri and Tijjani Reinders have already left this summer and now Nico Gonzalez to leave as well in this huge Man City midfield revamp. With Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez also potentially to come in as well as Bouaddi.
Manchester City fluked a late 2-1 win at home to Bournemouth on Sunday, yet Enzo Maresca choosing to play defender Guehi in central midfield rather than Gonzalez. Indeed, Gonzalez not even brought off the bench even though Man City trailed until the 84th minute and four other subs used including veteran midfielder Kovacic.
Nico Gonzalez signed for Man City 18 months ago and started nine of their final 14 Premier League matches that 2024/25 season. Last season the midfielder made 25 Premier League appearances, starting 17 and off the bench in another eight.
Signed for £52m from Porto at the start of February 2025, the now 24-year-old midfielder made 41 Manchester City appearances (all competitions) in total the last season and a half.
I think very clear that Nico Gonzalez is heading out of the Etihad and now the only question is whether it will be St James’ Park he is going to end up at.
It sounds like Manchester City will be happy to take a transfer fee of around the £52m mark that they paid Porto a year and a half ago.
