It has now been revealed that Chelsea have agreed a club record £117m deal to sign Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa.
It exceeds the £115m deal that took Moises Caicedo.
It is Chelsea’s third £100m+ signing as they also paid £107m to Benfica for Enzo Fernandez.
BBC Sport report that Morgan Rogers will have a medical on Monday after England fly back from the 2026 World Cup.
They add that the 23-year-old will sign a six-year contract at Chelsea, with an option for a further year.
Rogers will have a medical on Monday after returning from international duty with England at the 2026 World Cup.
This is also a new transfer record for an English player, the £117m for Morgan Rogers edging above the £116m Manchester City agreed to pay to Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson.
Rogers joined Aston Villa from Middlesbrough in February 2024 in a deal worth £8m, rising to a potential £15m.
On top of that, a clause gives Middlesbrough 20% of any profit made by Aston Villa if/when selling Morgan Rogers.
BBC Sport saying that this will earn the Championship club more than £20m once the Chelsea deal is completed. Middlesbrough believe that this is also an English record for the largest ever transfer sell-on fee.
In the last three seasons Aston Villa have twice qualified for the Champions League and won the Europa League, they finished top four last season and yet are now forced to sell their best player to Chelsea who finished tenth last season.
This is the reality of how the UEFA and Premier League rules are working, despite their success Aston Villa having to trade some of their best players in order to satisfy SCR (Squad Cost Ratio) rules.
Youri Tielemans having already been sold to Manchester United, as Villa try to avoid punishments such as a ban from European competition and at same time trying to strengthen their squad for a new season where they will have Champions League football to contend with as well as the three domestic competitions.
Despite their failure on the pitch, Chelsea able to pay a £117m transfer fee and no doubt double Rogers’ wages, far beyond what Aston Villa could afford to pay the England international due to the SCR pressures.
