Welcome to day six of the 2026 World Cup finals.
We are aiming to bring you a daily round up of the matches to come and recent results.
There are 48 countries at these 2026 World Cup finals, the most there has ever been. The matches to take place across Mexico, Canada and the USA.
The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups of four, with the top two in each group automatically going through and the eight best performing teams who finish third in their groups.
So only 16 of the 48 countries will be knocked out after the 72 group games have all played out, with the other 32 teams going through to the knockout stages.
The latest four results all matches that ended in stalemates but containing so much intrigue.
A first goalless draw in the tournament but one of the most compelling matches so far, Spain unable to win or even score against Cape Verde. A huge shock that potentially calls into question whether they (Spain!) should be seen as one of the favourites to win the whole thing. Very early days but Spain looked to have so little spark or ideas on how to break down Cape Verde (Their 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha pictured below after the final whistle), who were relatively untroubled for most of the game.
Spain aren’t going to have it easy either in their other two Group H matches either judging by the Saudi Arabia 1 Uruguay 1 game. Saudi Arabia the better team in the first half and could have been more than 1-0 up at the break. Uruguay stepped it up in the second half and played far better, though they still had to wait until the 80th minute for their equaliser.
A similar story in Group G. Egypt going ahead after 20 minutes and bossing the game, only for Belgium to get better as the second half progressed and within seconds of coming on the pitch it was Lukaku who forced an own goal 66th minute equaliser. Belgium just about deserved their point by the final whistle but I was impressed by Egypt, as I was anticipating them to struggle.
The other Group G clash was one of those excellent surprise matches that you don’t see coming. Iran and New Zealand really going for it and former Newcastle striker Chris Wood getting an assist for a goal in each half, only for Iran to equalise each time. Over 70,000 there to see this match in Los Angeles and Group G now looks a very difficult one to predict the outcome.
