It has now been claimed that Nick Pope is in talks with two Premier League clubs ahead of a potential transfer.

Both Leeds United and Ipswich Town reported to be trying to sign the Newcastle United goalkeeper.

This comes on the back of media on both sides of the Channel reporting that Ewen Jaouen is on his way to St James’ Park.

Depending on which reports you read, a £24m deal for the France Under 21 international has either already been agreed, or is set to be soon, with a medical as soon as early next week.

Ewen Jaouen is still only 20 but the Stade de Reims 6ft 6 goalkeeper highly sought after by numerous clubs.

It looks all change in the goalkeeping department with Aaron Ramsdale not seeing his loan season turned into a permanent deal, John Ruddy leaving, Mark Gillespie staying but primarily in a coaching capacity and third choice at best, whilst Odysseas Vlachodimos is widely anticipated to be leaving permanently or another season out on loan.

As for Nick Pope, the 34-year-old only has one year left on his contract and a £5m transfer is speculated if he does indeed move on this summer.

Nick Pope was born in Soham, Cambridgeshire, and was an Ipswich Town season ticket holder as a kid, plus he played for the club’s academy from the age of 10 until released at 16.

After a spell at non-league side Bury Town he joined Charlton Athletic in 2011. The keeper also having a series of loan spells before a move to Burnley in 2016. Then after six years at Turf Moor, Eddie Howe signing the keeper for £10m in 2022 when Burnley were relegated.

A brilliant 2022/23 season followed as Nick Pope and his teammates conceded 33 Premier League goals, only champions Manchester City matched them. A more up and down NUFC career has followed in the next three seasons with United fans endlessly arguing the strengths and weaknesses of Nick Pope. Whether or not he does leave this summer, there is general acceptance that there will be a new number one in place when the 2026/27 season kicks off.
