Newcastle United 1 Barcelona 1 – Wednesday 10 March 2026 8pm
Instant fan/writer reaction from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘From such a high to such a low!
A brilliant performance, especially in the second half, should have seen us win and Barnes to be written into our European history.
We shot ourselves in the foot with the end of game management when we should have been taking a 1-0 lead to the Camp Nou.
The tie is still alive and I’m going to Barca with hope having witnessed tonight. Come on!!!’
Mark Jankowski:
‘A fantastic performance from Newcastle United tonight.
The night was ruined by yet another woeful ref.
He somehow pulled an extra 30 seconds out of thin air to allow Barcelona one last attack.
That was after ignoring every obvious yellow card offence by an ineffectual Yamal. We deserved better.’
Simon Ritter:
‘We seemed to have done enough to stifle Barca and take a slim advantage to Camp Nou when Barnes knocked in a superb Jacob Murphy first-time cross at the far post on 86 minutes.
Not quite, though.
The goal encouraged the visitors to respond.
When four added minutes were indicated, it seemed inadequate because of all the blatant time-wasting by opponents happy to take a draw.
The weak referee decided to go beyond the minimum, a potentially decisive call that let Barca escape unscathed when they were rightly awarded a penalty.
Yamal did almost nothing except coolly slot home the spot-kick, which was another accolade for Hall.
We should head to Spain full of hope, having matched and sometimes outplayed our opponents.’
Billy Miller:
‘Such a high, tarnished by the final kick of the game.
We were fabulous tonight and so worthy of the win.
Poor game management cost us when we were seconds from our most historic Champions League win.
Proud of the performance but gutted with the result.’
Tony Mallabar:
‘Great performance, only to give Barcelona an undeserved lifeline for next week.
Everyone in black and white did themselves proud tonight.’
David Punton:
‘We got the better of them – and then a cruel blow with the very last kick to deny us a famous and memorable victory.
For the sake of a paltry ten seconds!
That was a very good showing from Howe and his players against stellar opposition – we should have beaten Barcelona tonight.
One minor error and they end up with a penalty.
One day – hopefully soon – we’ll stop conceding late goals. It can’t go on forever, right?
Some immense performances in black and white. Lewis Hall is an excellent full back.
Taking a step back, I think we’d probably all have taken a draw.
It looked a mountain to climb on paper.
So it’s a mixed feeling. Some pride and some frustration.
This season is a marathon. We go over to Catalonia with everything to play for, of course, but my word it’s going to be tough. We’ll need one of the greatest nights in the club’s history.’
GToon:
‘Gutted.
We’d outplayed them, time was up and we should have won.
Yet again it’s a game of “play until they score”.
The lads played a really careful but aggressive game.
I thought we were perfect in so many areas.
But even tho it’s all to play for, it feels like a defeat.
I think injury time needs to be out of the ref’s hands like rugby league.
We don’t seem to get much luck in Europe do we.’
