It ended Chelsea 0 Newcastle 1.

Ahead of each game we ask one of our writers to come up with three positives and three negatives following the match.

An ‘interesting’ match at Stamford Bridge.

Plenty to talk about after this Premier League game.

As Newcastle United got a huge three points, taking them to within six points of Chelsea who started Saturday in fifth place in the table.

On this occasion it is David Punton:

POSITIVES

King’s Road strutters

We had previously won only one league game at Stamford Bridge since 1986. Astonishing.

It was great to take three points, set against the context of an avalanche of occasions we’ve left that old ground miserable and empty handed.

We’ve beaten the club world champions and put a dent in their Champions League hope to boot.

It’s also great to beat them because of what they stand for – selling hotels to themselves to exploit loopholes in the PSR regulations to help allow their lavish spending on new players.

The three points also propels us up the table during a key period of this marathon season.

Keeping it clean

It will give everyone a confidence boost to keep that clean sheet, most notably the back four and Aaron Ramsdale in nets, who has grabbed the starting spot from Nick Pope.

It’s also a significant win given the absence of Bruno and with Sandro Tonali down with illness (hopefully back in midweek).

Come in number 9

Anthony Gordon is doing really well.

One school of thought is that he’s a winger, not an out and out centre forward.

At Stamford Bridge Gordon was pressed into the striker role again and he’s come up with the goods.

He’s got electric pace and great movement. Another goal to his tally. He’s a key player.

NEGATIVES

Huddle muddle

Football never ceases to amaze.

Just when you think you’ve seen it all, along comes that Chelsea huddle with referee Paul Tierney seemingly trapped in the middle.

It was silly. It was embarrassing for Chelsea and their players.

The debate seems to be raging as to whether the players or the ref were actually at fault.

Tierney certainly didn’t look comfortable. At one stage it crossed my mind he should have yellow carded all of their entire starting eleven.

It got worse with Liam Rosenior’s take on it in during the post-match press conference, quotes that gave David Brent from The Office a run for his money.

War of words

Anthony Gordon fired back at Shearer and Rooney, who had suggested in midweek his absence from the Barcelona was, in some way, totally unnecessary.

Gordon was ill during the week.

I’m not too bothered about Rooney but it’s not great to see a club legend like Alan Shearer involved.

A note of caution

Chelsea were camped in our final third.

The concern there being we rode our luck a tad and soaking up pressure like that is always a risk.

Thankfully we held on to the slender 1-0 advantage.

Barca will be thinking they can do the same to us on Wednesday.

We’ve got to be ready, and play even better, if that’s at all possible, in the Nou Camp.
