The record has been smashed again, with confirmation Morgan Rogers has moved from Aston Villa to Chelsea.
The £117m is a new record for a Premier League club buying a British player.
The Chelsea deal exceeding the £116m Manchester City agreed to pay for Elliot Anderson.
Serial trophy winners Manchester City still happily motoring along and spending ever bigger fortunes despite having had 115 Premier League charges served on them years ago. Charges for which shamefully there is still no sign of any conclusion AND potential punishment. The punishment which would be surely relegation as a minimum if found guilty on even just a certain number of those serious charges.
Yet the media happily just forget about all that, treating it as perfectly normal how Manchester City are spending such riches
The same with Chelsea.
There was a conclusion to their own serious breaking of Premier League rules. Chelsea had made secret payments over many years in order to gain an unfair advantage when signing players on many occasions, some £50m in secret payments.
Instead of relegating them, the Premier League reached an agreement with Chelsea that they just had to pay a fine. You couldn’t make it up.
On signing for his new club, Morgan Rogers declaring: “Chelsea are the biggest club in London and a club I’ve always admired since I was a kid. I’m really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we’ve got and where the club is heading. That’s why I’m here and I can’t wait to get started.”
Yes, joining the biggest circus in London, indeed in the whole of the Premier League and Europe, every kid’s dream.
Plus of course the small fact that Morgan Rogers will have doubled or trebled his wages.
Yes, really excited to be joining ‘the project’, whatever that is at Stamford Bridge. Excited to be playing under the new Chelsea manager, until he is replaced by Christmas with the new new Chelsea manager.
Morgan Rogers leaving a top four club who have just won the Europa League and have qualified for the Champions League twice in the last three years. Choosing instead to join the project that is mid-table Chelsea who finished tenth last season.
Yet the media don’t even flag up at all just how wrong this all is. Aston Villa forced to sell their best player because the UEFA and Premier League financial rules dictate that has to happen. Morgan Rogers going to play in front of crowds of less than 40,000 tourists and American owners who operate the club as even more of a sick joke than it was under Abramovich.
The subservient media simply reporting this as all normal, despite the patently ludicrous way football works now is to the massive detriment of the game. Tottenham finish fourth bottom two seasons in a row yet having a spending capacity on transfer fees and wages far in excess of what almost all others are allowed to pay thanks to the rules. Same with Manchester United, they would have finished fourth bottom in 2024/25 if they hadn’t won on the final day of the season and yet then they were still able to spend further fortunes that other clubs are restricted from spending due to the rules, which allowed them outbid and bring in key signings that allow them to reinvent themselves. This at the same time despite Man U owing more than £1billion across all their various club debts.
