Paul Merson has given his verdict on the upcoming 2026/27 Premier League season.
The Chelsea fan and former Arsenal player predicting the finishing order of the top six come the end of May 2027.
Paul Merson also looking at the relegation question.
He only sees one team winning the Premier League.
Paul Merson declaring to Sky Sports: “I just can’t see anybody stopping Arsenal. They’ll win it quite comfortably. I don’t see a single weakness in them regarding the Premier League…I just don’t see anybody touching Arsenal at the moment. The only ones who can beat Arsenal are themselves.”
When it comes to who will get closest to Arsenal, a bit of a relative surprise.
Liverpool were very lucky to even get a place in the Champions League last season and fair to say their fans haven’t been convinced that the summer transfer window will massively change that.
Included in his thoughts on the scousers, Paul Merson stating: “Alexander Isak was so up and down with injury last season, they couldn’t really get him on the pitch. I don’t know if he’s going to need to take a bit more time, so I don’t know about his levels this season.”
Paul Merson gives the following as his predicted 2026/27 Premier League top six finishing order:
Arsenal
Liverpool
Chelsea
Man City
Tottenham
Man U
When placing Tottenham fifth, Paul Merson has this to say: “It’s funny how football works. Last season, Spurs were virtually relegated and they went to Aston Villa, who could have near-on sent them down. Spurs won the game, stayed up and are now going to take Villa’s place in the top six. Villa could have taken Spurs out of the equation and been ‘that team’. Now I’m not sure Villa can finish above Spurs anymore.”
In reality, it isn’t funny at all. Tottenham have finished 17th in both of the last two seasons whilst Aston Villa have finished 4th, 6th and 4th the last three league campaigns. Yet due to how the financial restrictions are set up to benefit the established financial elite, Aston Villa are finding themselves having to trade their best players to try and stay with the Premier League and UEFA financial rules.
Paul Merson then asked the question: “Do any of the promoted teams stay up?”
The former Arsenal star replying: “It isn’t down to the three promoted teams. It’s down to the teams like Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Newcastle who could drop in there. I like Bournemouth but their squad is thin as well with Europe. You get their best XI out and it’ll be good, but if they start getting three or four injuries… What are we going to see from Newcastle as well? What’s happening there is just unbelievable.”
The same as Aston Villa, Newcastle United now finding themselves having to seriously reduce their wage bill and net transfer spend to try and stay within their agreed financial plan with UEFA after having broken their spending rules, or else face a ban when next qualifying for any UEFA competition.
