It is time for the Newcastle United owners to make their commitment clear

I have supported Newcastle United for over 55 years.

My mother used to take my brother and I to watch ‘Pop’ Robson, Wyn Davies, Supermac et al.

When my father passed away we commemorated him by buying a paver outside St. James’s Park.

My family have supported the ’Toon’ through thick and thin. Mostly thin, with the odd trip to Wembley, and the brief Kevin Keegan purple patch thrown in.

Our faith was tested as we endured the Mike Ashley years. The FCB shamelessly taunted Geordies while he asset stripped the club. We wondered would it be worth switching allegiance to a club that actually tried to compete for trophies?

Eventually patience was rewarded by the arrival of Amanda Staveley, Mehrdad Ghodoussi, the Reuben family, and Yasir Al-Rumayyan. At last we had Newcastle United owners who saw the potential and wanted to invest in the club.

Unfortunately, it had come too late, as Mike Ashley and Steve Bruce had consigned us to the Championship. The new owners appointed a new manager. Eddie who? Eddie Howe’s going to keep us up???

The result was historic, as Eddie Howe not only kept us in the Premier League, but also delivered a trophy, and qualification for the Champions League twice. He is the most successful manager we have had in modern times.

Eddie Howe ‘gets us’ and has turned down lucrative offers elsewhere to build a dynasty on the Tyne instead. Ferguson’s Man United, Shankly’s Liverpool, and Pep’s Man City are the models for success.

Newcastle United entered the 2025/26 season without a CEO, or a Sporting Director, leaving Eddie Howe to perform these roles in addition to his day job.

The pre-season was sabotaged by the RAT and the club was forced into hasty last minute moves in the transfer market. As a result the squad was not strong enough to sustain competing on four fronts and playing three times a week. Despite this, the team have reached the last 16 and semi-finals of the domestic cups, as well as the last 16 of the Champions league.

The league form, and in particular the losses to the Mackems, has been unacceptable. However, I am amazed that anyone with Newcastle’s best interest at heart should suggest the we should ditch Eddie Howe.

The media always wants to create chaos to report on and trolls from other clubs want to destabilise The Toon.

One of the contributors on The Mag suggested the risk of ending up like Tottenham if the present malaise is not remedied. Spurs have had six managers since Eddie Howe arrived at Newcastle and still have not found a solution . Perhaps changing the manager is not the panacea it is made out to be?

The continued success of the NUFC project depends on investment in a new training facility and adding capacity for home games. It is time for the Newcastle United owners to make their commitment clear, back Eddie Howe, and generate the momentum to carry us into next season.
