Miguel Almiron made World Cup history in San Francisco.
A dream start for Paraguay against Turkey in their second group game, as it only took 64 seconds for Galarza to give them the lead.
Juts before half-time though, Miguel Almiron becoming the first player to ever be shown a red card at a World Cup match for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent.
This happened just before the break, with Miguel Almiron covering his mouth with his hand while speaking to Turkey’s Mert Muldur, who immediately informed an official standing next to him.
Following a check by the video assistant referee (VAR), the on-pitch referee Ivan Barton from El Salvador announced (VERY dramatically) to the crowd that he was sending off the former Newcastle United player.
The 32-year-old Miguel Almiron left devastated.
The new rule implemented for the first time at the World Cup, the decision to introduce it was taken at a special meeting of the International Football Association Board (Ifab) in Vancouver in April.
Despite under unbelievable pressure, especially after Almiron was sent off just before the break, somehow Paraguay winning 1-0.
The Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro marched into the dressing room after the final whistle and the first thing he said when seeing Miguel Almiron was: “Change that face!”
Alfaro speaking at his press conference and revealing he told Miguel Almiron: “We have won! Don’t feel guilty about anything. What happened [with your sending off] brought the fighting spirit out of your teammates.”
The Paraguay manager going on to say: “Miguel Almiron has a huge commitment to the team and that is why he was hurt. He felt that for an experienced player like him, that should not happen, but we are here to stand by him.”
Miguel Almiron apologised to his teammates for the red card but Julio Enciso spoke for the rest of the Paraguay players: “Who wouldn’t be hurt by a red card so early in the match? But we did it for Miguel.”
